Hockey Team To End Road Trip At Vermont

The Terrier hockey team, hoping to bounce back after last Saturday night's 3-0 loss to Niagara, travels to Vermont on Saturday (October 23rd) to mark the end of the team's season-opening road trip. Their first home game will be next Saturday night (October 30th) when they host Providence College. Prior to the faceoff of the game, the Terriers will retire Travis Roy's jersey number 24.

END OF THE ROAD TRIP; FIRST NON-CLASSIC MATCHUP: Tonight's game marks the end of the Terriers' season-opening road trip that took them to Anchorage, Alaska two weeks ago and to Albany, NY last weekend-This also marks the first non-classic game on the schedule. Two weeks ago, B.U. played Air Force and Alaska-Anchorage at the Johnson Nissan Classic in Anchorage. Then, last weekend, they played RPI and Niagara in the ECAC/Crowne Plaza Face Off Classic in Albany.
SECOND OF FIVE VS. THE ECAC: Tonight marks the second of five games the Terriers will play against ECAC teams this year. Last Friday night, the Terriers bowed to RPI, 3-2, in the first game of the ECAC/Crowne Plaza Face Off Classic. Still ahead are games at Harvard on November 23rd, home against Yale on January 23rd, and the Beanpot opener against Harvard at the FleetCenter on February 7th.
SERIES HISTORY VS. CATAMOUNTS: In a series that dates back to the 1971-72 season, the Terriers have won 24 of the previous 35 matchups against the Catamounts. Vermont has 10 wins, while there has been one tie-The Terriers won five in a row from the 1989-90 season through 1995-96. However, the Catamounts have won two of the last three including last year's 8-6 win at Brown Arena.
RECAPPING LAST YEAR'S GAME: Jason Reid scored three goals, and the Catamounts converted on 5-of-7 power play chances en route to an 8-6 win over the Terriers in a game played on October 24th at Brown Arena. After staking the Terriers to a 1-0 lead early in the game, Vermont countered with three straight power play goals to lead 3-1 at the end of the first period-Seven goals were scored in the second periodfour by the Terriers and three by Vermont, as the Catamounts led, 6-5, entering the final period. Vermont then scored twice in the final period, while B.U. scored with just one minute to play in the game to account for the final margin-In addition to Reid, Matt Sanders scored twice for Vermont while the other goal scorers were Andreas Moborg, Mark Gouette, and Phillipe Choiniere. Carl Corazzini scored twice for the Terriers, while their other goal scorers were Scott Perry, Albie O'Connell, Chris Heron, and Mike Pandolfo.
FIRST APPEARANCE FOR TAPP: Last year's game against Vermont marked the first collegiate appearance for Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC). Tapp took over for starter Michel Larocque, who had 8 saves and allowed 6 goals through the first two periods. Tapp played 19:24 of the third period, had 2 saves, and allowed 2 goals. Marty Phillips had 30 saves in the win.
LAST TIME IN BURLINGTON: Single goals by Tom Poti, Mike Sylvia, and Chris Drury combined with a 32-save effort by Michel Larocque to give the Terriers a 3-2 win over the Catamounts at Gutterson Field House on October 25, 1997. B.U. led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Poti and Sylvia before B.J. Kilbourne cut the Terriers' lead to 2-1 early in the second period. Drury scored four minutes later to give B.U. its two-goal cushion again. Stephane Piche closed out the scoring late in the third period-James Tierney had 20 saves in the losing effort.
VUORI, PRIEM TO SEE FIRST ACTION OF SEASON TONIGHT: Senior defenseman/forward Juha Vuori (Ulvila, Finland) and freshman Ryan Priem (Minnetonka, MN) are scheduled to see their first action of the season tonight. A year ago, Vuori played in 35-of-37 games and had 4-1418. A forward throughout his entire hockey-playing career, he was moved to defense last season where he played 29 games. In the games in which he played defense, he had 3-1316. The year before, he played in 36-of-38 games at left wing for the Terriers and had 10-717-Priem spent last season at The Taft School where he played defense and had 1-1011.
TAPP SCHEDULED TO PLAY TONIGHT: Terrier head coach Jack Parker has alternated his Jason Tapp and Rick DiPietro in goal through the team's first four games, and expects to continue that format tonight. As a result, Tapp is scheduled to start tonight.
TAPP THIS YEAR: The sophomore goalie comes into tonight's game with a 1-1-0 record along with a 3.03 GAA and an .838 save percentage. Vs. Air Force: Tapp earned his first collegiate win in the Terriers' 8-3 victory over Air Force on October 9th. As a freshman last year, he appeared in 6 games and had an 0-2-0 record along with a 4.46 GAA and an .826 save percentage. In the win over Air Force, he had 13 saves 4 in the first, 5 in the second, and 4 in the third. The Falcons scored their goals in the first and second periods. Vs. RPI: He had 18 saves, 8 of which came in the first period, while he had 7 in the second, and 3 in the third. However, the Engineers skated to a 3-2 win last Friday night (October 15th). After holding RPI scoreless through the first period, Tapp yielded a pair of goals in the second period and one in the third.

TEAM LEADERS: Senior left wing Tommi Degerman is the team captain, while senior center Chris Heron and junior right wing Carl Corazzini are the assistant captains. Corazzini is the first underclassman to serve in one of the captain's roles since Jack O'Callahan was a co-captain of the Terriers' 1977-78 national championship team. The following year, in 1978-79, he was the team's sole captain.
POWER PLAY OF EARLY CONCERN: Just four games into the season, the Terriers have had problems on the power play. They come into tonight's game converting on just 3-of-24 chances for a 12.5 percent efficiency. They opened the season 2-for-6 vs. Air Force and then were 1-for-6 vs. Alaska-Anchorage. However, they were 0-for-6 vs. Rensselaer last Friday night and 0-for-6 again on Saturday night vs. Niagara. Dating back to the Alaska-Anchorage game, the Terriers are 0 for their last 13 power-play chances-Special teams was also a problem last year, as the Terriers converted on just 32-of-221 chances for 14.5 percent. By comparison, their opponents were 56-of-220 for 25.5 percent-On a positive note thus far this year, the Terriers have killed off 17-of-21 chances by their opponents (81 percent).
OFF TO QUICK STARTS: The following players are off to a quick start on offense this year. Jack Baker: Points in three of the team's first four games, as he has 1-34. Didn't score his 4th point last year until his 13th game. Tommi Degerman: Points in three of the team's first four games, as he has 1-45. Didn't score his 5th point last year until the 7th game of the year. Chris Heron: Points in three of the team's first four games, as he has 1-45. A year ago, he got off to an even quicker start with 7-310 in his first 6 games. He went on to lead the team in goals with 18, while he was second in scoring with 35 points. John Sabo: Points in three of the team's first four games, as he has 1-23. He is tied with John Cronin for the scoring lead among the freshmen. FRESHMEN MAKING MARK ON OFFENSE: All four freshmen skaters have scored at least one goal this year. The leaders are defenseman John Cronin (Duxbury, MA) and center Brian Collins (Shrewsbury, MA), who are tied for the team lead in goals with two. Right wing John Sabo (Harding Township, NJ) and defenseman Mike Bussoli (Calgary, ALTA) have one each. As a group, the freshmen have accounted for 6 of the team's 15 goals or 40 percent of the offense.
79th YEAR OF COMPETITION: This is the 79th year of intercollegiate play for the Terrier hockey team. Including this year's 2-2-0 start, the Terriers have compiled a record of 1146-654-82 for a .631 winning percentage.
DECADE OF THE TERRIERS: Since the 1989-90 season, B.U. teams have amassed an impressive 269-105-27 mark for a .704 winning percentage. They have played in the NCAA Tournament in nine of the 10 years and advanced to the Finals in seven of those years. They won the Division 1 championship game in 1995, while they played in the title game in 1991, 1994, and 1997. Below is how the Terriers have done during the decade.

SEVEN FOR 600 FOR PARKER: Now in his 27th season, the veteran Terrier coach comes into tonight's game needing just seven wins to become the fourth college hockey coach in history to reach the 600-win total. Ranked fourth all-time in total wins among all college hockey coaches, Parker's record to date is 593-287-51 for a .659 winning percentage. Below are the top four coaches in terms of wins. MOST WINS AT SAME DIVISION 1 PROGRAM: While Parker ranks fourth in total wins, he is first in Division 1 in victories at the same institution. Mason has 550 victories at Michigan State. Peters has 685 victories at Bemidji. However, they have been Division 2 prior to this season. This is their first year with a full Division 1 schedule, as they are one of the seven teams in the newly-formed College Hockey America (CHA) league. The other members are Wayne State of Detroit, Niagara, Air Force, Army, Findlay of Ohio, and Alabama-Hunstville.
PARKER VS. VERMONT; ECAC: The Terrier coach has an all-time record of 22-8-1 (.726 winning percentage) against Vermont, while his overall record vs the ECAC is 169-67-7 (.710 winning percentage). Included is a 91-33-2 (.724) mark against the Ivy League and 78-34-5 (.688) vs. the non-Ivy members of the ECAC.
TERRIERS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN HOCKEY EAST POLL: In the pre-season poll of the nine Hockey East head coaches, the Terriers were picked to finish fifth this year with 46 points. That is where the team finished in last year's final standings. This year's pre-season favorite to win the regular-season title is Boston College. The Eagles, who have not finished first in the final standings since the 1990-91 season, are the overwhelming choice this year. BC, which finished third in last year's final standings but went on to win the post-season tournament, received eight-of-nine first-place votes and 79 points in this year's balloting. The University of New Hampshire, which won the regular-season title last year and advanced to the NCAA title game where it lost to Maine in overtime, finished second in this year's balloting with 68 points. Defending NCAA champion Maine was the only other team with a first-place vote. The Black Bears were picked just behind New Hampshire with 67 points. Providence, which finished fourth last year, is the coaches' pick again to finish fourth this year with 53 points. Then come the Terriers followed, in order, by Northeastern, 36 points; UMass/Amherst and UMass/Lowell, tied for seventh with 20 points; and Merrimack, 16 points.
