BURLINGTON, VT. (October 23) -- The Terrier hockey team suffered its third straight loss of the season, bowing 7-4 at the University of Vermont on, but B.U. fans can look to a number of positives as the team slipped to a 2-3-0 record.
First, there were the 48 shots the team took, 18 of which came in the second period, while the Catamounts had just 20 shots, 4 of which were in the third period.
Second, there were the two-goal efforts by freshman center Brian Collins (Shrewsbury, MA), and sophomore center Dan Cavanaugh (Springfield, MA).
Third, there was improved play on the power play. Entering the game 0 for their last 13 chances while skating a man up, the Terriers were 1-for-6 against the Catamounts.
Finally, there was the never quit attitude the Terriers showed even after going down 3-0, and 5-1.
"I was pleased with how hard we played tonight," said head coach Jack Parker. "We never quit, and we pushed to the end. We didn't lose tonight because of a lack of effort.
"It's just that everytime we made a mistake, it jumped into the net for them," cotinued Parker. "We just weren't as thorough as I would have liked us to be."
As was the case a year ago, the Catamounts took advantage of special teams play Last season, en route to an 8-6 win over the Terriers at Walter Brown Arena, Vermont converted on 5-of-7 power play chances.
This year, they were 2-of-4 on the power play, while they also scored a shorthanded goal.
Vermont led 2-0 at the end of the first period and opened it up to a 3-0 bulge early in the second period, before Collins cut the deficit to 3-1 on a power play goal at 8:38 of the second period. The assists went to sophomore Pat Aufiero (Winchester, MA) and Cavanaugh.
Vermont then countered with a pair of unanswered goals to lead 5-1 entering the final period.
Cavanaugh scored the first of his two third-period goals at 10:59 of the period with an assist to senior Juha Vuori (Ulvila, Finland), who was playing his first game of the year.
After Veront scored 32 seconds later, Collins cut the deficit to 6-3 at 12:03 of the period.
With his team trailing by this three-goal margin, Parker pulled sophomore goaltender Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC) with 3:14 to play in the game. The Catamounts took advantage of the empty net with just 49 seconds to play to open a 7-3 lead.
Cavanaugh closed out the scoring with 36 seconds left with the assists to freshman John Cronin (Duxbury, MA) and junior Nick Gillis (Winthrop, MA).
Tapp was charged with the loss as he made 13 saves, while Andrew Allen had 44 saves in the winning effort.
"Vermont played very well in front of their goalie," said Parker.
