BOSTON (November 12) -- Sophomore left wing Mike Pandolfo (Burlington, Mass) scored two goals and freshman goalie Rick DiPietro (Winthrop, Mass.) turned aside 29 shots to lead the Terrier hockey team to a 4-3 win over UMass/Lowell at Brown Arena on Friday night.
The win was the fourth in a row for the Terriers, who are now 6-3-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Hockey East action. The win, coupled with Boston College losing to Northeastern, 6-5, on Friday night, lifted the Terriers into sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Trailing 2-1 at the end of the first period, the Terriers scored three times in the second period to just once for the River Hawks, and that's the way the score remained through the third period.
Pandolfo, who had scored just two goals in the team's first eight games, equaled his season total in the second period against UMass/Lowell.
The first goal came at the 11:55 mark of the period with assists to junior Nick Gillis (Winthrop, Mass.) and freshman Brian Collins (Shrewsbury, Mass).
The second goal, which proved to be the game-winner, was at 14:38 with the assists again going to Gillis and Collins.
The puck bounced well for me tonight, Pandolfo said after the game. Nicky and Brian did a great job feeding me the puck. I was at the right place at the right time.
The Terriers trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period, as sophomore Chris Dyment (Reading, Mass.) accounted for the Terriers' only goal.
The River Hawks held a decided edge in shots in the second period, outshooting the Terriers, 12-8. But, B.U. won the battle that counted, outscoring UMass/Lowell, 3-1.
The Terriers managed to take control in large part due to the play of DiPietro, who improved his season record to 4-1-0. The freshman goalie turned aside 12 of UMass/Lowell's 13 shots.
I was very impressed with his play, River Hawks' coach Tim Whitehead said of DiPietro after the game. He was very sharp. He handles the puck well, he is very aggressive, and he makes the key saves.
The Terriers are now 6-3-0 this season, compared to 2-6-1 at this point last year. We have been playing with a lot more intensity this year, said head coach Jack Parker. We also have a lot of zip that we didn't have last year.
We are having a lot more fun this year, said Pandolfo. We dug ourselves a hole last year, and we could never dig ourselves out. This year, we have a will to win that we didn't have last year.
Another of the keys has been the play of the freshmen, said Pandolfo. They have been playing great, and it's great to have them around.
