BOSTON - (Nov. 2) Freshman goalie Rick DiPietro (Winthrop, Mass), whose 25 saves helped the Terrier hockey team defeat Providence College, 3-2, last Saturday night (October 30th), has been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week.
DiPietro made a great difference for them tonight, Providence head coach Paul Pooley said after the game. He handled the puck very well and was able to get it out of their zone. As a result, we couldn't forecheck them very effectively.
Rick made great decisions out there, Terrier head coach Jack Parker said of DiPietro. He showed that he could really execute. I was very happy with his poise and overall performance.
En route to the win over Providence, DiPietro was busiest in the third period when he turned aside 11-of-12 Providence shots. In the first period, he stopped all eight Friar shots, while he turned aside 6-of-7 shots in the second period.
With the victory, DiPietro improved his record to 2-1-0 to go along with an .889 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average.
According to this week's Hockey East statistics, DiPietro is tied for fourth in the league in goals against average both in league games only (2.00) and in all games (2.67).
One of the most highly-recruited scholastic players in the nation last year, DiPietro spent the last two seasons in the U.S. National Program in Ann Arbor, MI. During his two years with the team, he compiled an overall record of 52-30-2 with a 2.78 GAA and an .898 save percentage.
His final season, he played in a combined total of 46 games and was 31-11-2 with a 2.46 GAA and a .903 save percentage. In U.S. Hockey League games only, he finished fourth in the league both in wins (22) and GAA (2.32). As a junior, he was 21-19-0 with a 3.11 GAA and an .893 save percentage.
