Hockey Team Continues Its Winning Ways

Junior Carl Corazzini (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Chris Heron (Mississauga, ONT) each scored goals and freshman Rick DiPietro (Winthrop, Mass.) turned aside 23 shots as the Terrier hockey team skated to a 2-1 win over the host Harvard Crimson on Tuesday night (November 23rd).
The win improved the Terriers' record to 7-3-2, as they are already halfway to their win total of a year ago when the team was 14-20-3.
What's more the victory was the 598th in head coach Jack Parker's 26-plus-year career at B.U. With home games scheduled against Denver on Friday night and Colorado College on Saturday night, the veteran coach could treat B.U. fans to a milestone victory by the end of the weekend. Only three other college hockey coaches have topped the 600-win mark. They are Ron Mason, who is still coaching at Michigan State and is the all-time winningest coach with 847 victories. Ron Peters, who is still coaching at Bemidji State in Minnesota, is second with 730, while Len Ceglarski, who retired after coaching at Clarkson and Boston College, had 674 victories.
Against Harvard on Tuesday night, the Terriers converted on two-of-eight power play chances to account for their scoring.
Corazzini scored the first with an assist to sophomore defenseman Chris Dyment (Reading, Mass.) at 5:55 of the first period. Almost 10 minutes later, at 15:22, the Crimson scored the equalizer on the power play. Harvard had seven other man advantage situations, but the Terrier defense, along with DiPietro's play in the net, thwarted Harvard each time.
Then, at 4:56 of the second period, Heron, again with an assist to Dyment, scored the game-winning goal.
Neither team scored in the third period, although Harvard had a number of excellent chances. The last came with 2:48 to play when Brett Chodorow took a point-blank shot at DiPietro just outside the crease. DiPietro covered it up and left no rebound to be had.
"I thought Rick played very well in the cage," said Coach Parker. "I also thought (sophomore defenseman) Pat Aufiero (Winchester, Mass) played a great game.
"In fact, I was very happy with how our five defensemen played. We have (freshman) John Cronin (Duxbury, Mass.) and (junior) Colin Sheen (Hopkinton, NH) out with injuries, and we were forced to play just five defensemen tonight. And, four of them played a lot."
The quartet included Aufiero, Dyment, freshman Mike Bussoli (Calgary, ALTA) and junior Keith Emery (Belmont, Mass.). The fifth defenseman who also saw limited action was senior Juha Vuori (Ulvila, FIN), while freshman Ryan Priem (Minnetonka, MN0 saw just a handful of shifts.
"I don't think our offense had its A' game tonight, but I was very happy with how we played team defense," said Parker. "I was particularly happy with our penalty killing."
The Terriers killed off 7-of-8 chances by the Crimson to bring their season total to 62-of-74 for an outstanding 83.8 percent efficiency.
