Hockey Team Travels to Maine for Millenium Finale

The Terriers' eighth-ranked hockey team will be traveling to fourth-ranked University of Maine for a key Hockey East game tomorrow night (Friday, December 10th). It will be B.U.'s final Hockey East game of the millennium.

LAST HOCKEY EAST GAME OF THE MILLENNIUM: Tonight's game marks final Hockey East game of the millennium for the Terriers, who will go into their first semester break when they get home.
UNDEFEATED IN LAST ELEVEN: The Terriers come into tonight's game with a 9-0-2 mark in their last 11 outings. Prior to this stretch, they had lost three in a row. In the last 11 games, B.U. has both outscored its opponents, 42-24, and outshot them, 301-291-In special teams' play, both teams have had 68 chances on the power play in the last 11 games. The Terriers have been successful of 14 of their chances (20.6 percent), while the opponents have been successful just 7 times (10.3 percent).
SABO LATEST INVITEE TO US JUNIOR TEAM; JOINS AUFIERO, DiPIETRO ON TEAM: Freshman right wing John Sabo (Harding Twp, NJ) received an invitation just two days ago (Wednesday) to play on the U.S. Junior Team that will play at the World Junior Championships from Decembe 25, 1999-January 4, 2000 in Skelleftea and Umea, Sweden Sabo was originally left off the 22-player roster. However, when Wisconsin's Matt Doman suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon last weekend, Sabo was named as his replacement. Earlier this month, on December 2nd, both Terrier goalie Rick DiPietro (Winthrop, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Pat Aufiero (Winchester, Mass.) were named to the team -Over the years, the B.U. hockey team has been very well represented on the U.S. Junior team. In fact, Aufiero, Sabo, and DiPietro bring the total to 33 former Terriers who have been on the Junior team-One former player, forward Scott Young, was on three Junior teams1985, 1986, and 1987, making him just one of 12 American players who have participated in three World Junior Championships-Two former players, Young (1987) and Scott Lachance (1991), were voted to the All-Tournament Team, the crme-de-la-crme of the best junior players in the world.
TERRIERS CLIMBING IN TOP-10: After reaching the Top10 for the first time this season two weeks ago, the Terriers find themselves either 7th or 8th this week depending on which poll you look at. In the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Top-15 poll, they are 8th with 126 points, just seven points behind seventh-ranked Michigan State. In the US College Hockey Online ranking, B.U. is 7th with 157 points, 34 points behind sixth-ranked RPI. Finally, in the WMPL College Coaches' poll, the Terriers are 6th with 81 points, just five behind fifth-ranked Michigan State. In all three polls, North Dakota is number one. The Fighting Sioux holds the top spot in the USA Today poll with all 9 first-place votes. They received 32-of-40 in the US College Hockey Online poll and 7-of-11 from the WMPL voters.
A MONTH TO REMEMBER: The Terriers enjoyed one of their best months of November ever with a 6-0-2 record. In the eight games, they outscored their opponents, 33-18, but, ironically, they were outshot, 230-221. The real key to the team's success during the month was its special teams' play. The Terriers were 14-of-49 on the power play (28.6 percent), while they killed off 44-of-49 chances by their opponents (89.8 percent). Here is a breakdown during the first two months of some of the key statistics.

TERRIERS ON THE ROAD: The Terriers come into tonight's game with an overall record of 5-3-1 on the road, while they are 2-0-1 in league action-They have won their last two road games, and both by identical 2-1 scoresvs. Harvard and UMass, while they are 3-0-1 in their last four games away from home-Their last loss on the road was vs. Vermont7-4 on October 23rd. As it turned out, it was their last loss either home or way, as they are 9-0-2 since the defeat at Vermont-Statistically, Tommi Degerman (Helsinki, Finland) and Dan Cavanaugh (Springfield, Mass.) are the point leaders with 4-711 and 2-911, respectively. Chris Heron (Mississauga, ONT), Chris Dyment (Reading, Mass.), and Brian Collins (Shrewsbury, Mass.) are tied with Degerman for the team lead in goals on the road with four-Rick DiPietro has a 4-1-1 record along with a 2.47 GAA and a .900 on the road, while Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC) has a 1-2-0 record with a 4.06 GAA and a .789 save percentage-As a team, the Terriers have outscored their hosts, 33-28 and have an advantage on the power play. B.U. has converted on 10-of-55 chances (18.2 percent), while their opponents are 8-of-51 (15.7 percent).
DiPIETRO SCHEDULED TO START IN NET TONIGHT: Freshman Rick DiPietro is scheduled to start in net tonight for the Terriers-His last outing was last Friday night when he had 18 saves in the 2-1 win at UMass/Amherst-He is undefeated in his last seven outings, as he has a 6-0-1 mark. During these seven games, he has allowed only 15 goals and had 184 saves for a .925 save percentage. In the seven games, he has played 425 minutes for a 2.12 GAA -His last loss, and only defeat of the season was against Niagara on October 16th. He had 25 saves in the 3-0 blanking-He has a season-high 34 saves in a 5-1 win over Colorado College on December 3rd, while his lowest save total was 14 in his season-opening win over Alaska-Anchorage, 5-3-He was the Hockey East Rookie of the Month in November. During the month, he was 4-0-1 with a .922 save percentage and a 2.36 GAA.
CRONIN, SHEEN REMAIN SIDELINED: Two defensemenjunior Colin Sheen (Hopkinton, NH) and freshman John Cronin (Duxbury, Mass.) remain sidelined by injuries. Sheen suffered a broken left wrist in the second period of the New Hampshire game on November 19th. He underwent surgery on November 22nd and will be out until at least the first of the year. Cronin, who was one of the team's top scorers through the first nine games, suffered a broken left thumb in the first period of the UMass/Lowell game on November 12th. It is hoped he will be back in the lineup when the Terriers travel to Duluth, MN for the Silverado Shootout on December 27-28.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: Last season, the Terriers were 7-8-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the league at this point of the season. The problem was not on offense as the team had scored 57 goals. There was a concern on defense, though, as the 14 opponents had scored 57 goals. This season, the team has scored four more goals, 61, than a year ago, while the defense has allowed 14 less goals, 43, than last season.
NOT THE SHOTS THAT COUNT: The Terriers have outshot their opponents in 8-of-16 games this year, and are 7-2-0 in those games. They have been outshot 5 times and are 2-1-2 in those games. Twice, this year, the Terriers and their opponents have had equal number of shots, and the Terriers are 2-0-0. HERON, DEGERMAN CLOSING IN ON 100 POINTS: Seniors Chris Heron and Tommi Degerman, who are not just classmates but also linemates and roommates, come into tonight's game with 86 career points, apiece. Heron has 36-5086 in 126 games over the past three-plus years, while Degerman has 38-4886 in 95 games. Degerman joined the team halfway through the 1996-97 season.
OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMEN: The Terriers' eight defensemen this year have combined to score 16 goals and add 22 assists for 38 points in 16 games o r an average of 2.4 ppg. Last year, in 37 games, the seven defensemen had 10 goals and 52 assists for 62 points, or an average of 1.7 ppg. The leading goal scorer among the defensemen this year is Chris Dyment, who is tied with right wing Tommi Degerman for the team lead with 8. John Cronin, who played in the team's first nine games before he suffered his broken left thumb, remains second among the defensemen in goals scored with three. Last year, Pat Aufiero and Juha Vuori (Ulvila, FIN) led the defensemen with 3 goals each. Aufiero, who missed the first half of last season with a broken wrist, played in 22 games, while Vuori, who alternated between forward and defense a year ago, played 29 games on the blue line. This year, in 16 games, Aufiero has 2-68, while Vuori, who has played in 12-of-16 games, has 0-3--3.
DOG BITES: Jack Baker has points in 4 of his last 7 games. During this stretch, he has 1-34-Dan Cavanaugh has points in 10 of his last 12 games. Currently leading the team in both assists (16) and points (20), Cavanaugh has 4-1418 in the last 12 games- -Brian Collins has points in 3 of his last 4 games (1-34), in 4 of his last 6 (1-45), and in 6 of his last 9 (2-610). Overall this year, Collins has points in 10-of-16 and has never gone more than one game without at least one point- Carl Corazzini has at least one point in 9 of his last 11 games. During this stretch, he has 5-510. Overall, he has at least one point in 11-of-16 games this season-Tommi Degerman has at least one point in his last 4 games (2-24) and in 6 of his last 7 (6-39). Four of the 6 goals have been on the power play. He had 2 each vs. Northeastern and New Hampshire-After scoring 2 goals and adding an assist in his first 6 games, Chris Dyment has 6-511 in his last 10 games-Keith Emery has a point (1-12) in each of his last 2 games. His goal vs. UMass last Friday night was his first since Feb. 27, 1998a stretch of 48 games. This is also just the second time in his collegiate career that he has a point in two straight games. The only previous time was vs. Niagara (0-11) on Jan. 3, 1997, while the other was vs. BC (1-01) on Jan. 9, 1998-Nick Gillis has points in 5 of his last 8 games. During this stretch, he has 2-79. Overall, he has points in 9-of-16 games this year -Chris Heron has points in 9 of his last 10 games (4-812), while, overall, he has points in 13-of-16 games this year. A year ago, he opened the season with 12-517 in his first 16 games and went on to lead the team in goals (18) and finish second in points (35). This year, he has 5-1217 in 16 games-After scoring just one goal and no assists in his first 7 games this year, Mike Pandolfo has 6-39 in his last 9 games-After losing two of his first three decisions, Jason Tapp is 3-0-1 in his last 4 outings. In addition to his 1-2-0 mark in the first three games, he had a 4.38 GAA and a .772 save percentage. In his last four games, he has a 2.16 GAA and a .906 save percentage.
TERRIERS AMONG HOCKEY EAST LEADERS: The Terriers, who were picked to finish fifth in the pre-season poll of the nine Hockey East coaches, are currently in second place just one point behind front-running New Hampshire. Their 6-0-2 record gives them 14 points, while the Wildcats are 7-0-1 for 15 points-Individually, Dan Cavanaugh is tied for first with BC's Jeff Farkas in scoring in league games only as each has 13 points. In all games, Cavanaugh (20) is tied with Providence's Doug Sheppard for second behind BC's Jeff Farkas (21)-Others in the top-10 in scoring in all games are Heron and Degerman, who are tied for fifth with 17 points, and Dyment, who has 14 points and is tied with four others for 10th-In league games only, in addition to Cavanaugh, others in the top-10 in scoring are Heron and Degerman who are tied with Maine's Cory Larose for sixth with nine points. Corazzini, with eight points, is tied with six others for ninth- As a team, in all games, the Terriers are first in goals per game (3.81), fourth in goals allowed (2.69), third in power play percentage (18.4 percent) and fourth in penalty killing (86.2 percent). In league games, they are first in goals per game (3.88), fifth in goals allowed (2.75), second in power play percentage (17.8 percent), and fifth in penalty killing (88.2 percent).

TEAM LEADERS: Senior left wing Tommi Degerman is the team captain, while senior center Chris Heron and junior right wing Carl Corazzini are the assistant captains. Corazzini is the first underclassman to serve in one of the captain's roles since Chris Drury was an assistant captain as a junior during the 1996-97 season. The following year, in 1997-98, en route to being voted the Hobey Baker winner as college hockey's premier player, Drury was the team's co-captain along with Chris Kelleher.
OFF AGAIN, ON AGAIN, OFF AGAIN ON THE POWER PLAY: The Terriers' power play efficiency has been somewhat like a roller coaster this year. It started the season on a down note as the Terriers converted on just 4-of-32 (.125 percent efficiency) in their first six games. Their record during this stretch was 3-3-0-During the next eight games, the team was on the upswing converting on 14-of-49 chances (28.6 percent). Its record in these games was 6-0-2-Then, in last weekend's series against UMass, the Terriers were on the downward turn going 0-for-11, while they swept the two games- The Terriers have been held without a power play goal in just 5-of-16 games RPI, Niagara, Providence, and the two UMass games, and their record in these five is 3-2-0.
EFFECTIVE KILLING PENALTIES: All season, the Terriers have done an outstanding job killing penalties. In fact, in seven of the 16 games to date, the Terriers have not allowed a power-play goal. What's more, in the last four games, three of the opponents have been 0-for-the-game. The three included Denver (0-for-7), Colorado College (0-for-4) and UMass (0-for-4) last Friday night. The Minutemen broke the streak on Saturday night when they went 1-for-5. Thus, in the last four games, B.U. has killed off 19-of-20 chances by their opponents, or a .950 efficiency- Dating back to the New Hampshire game on November 19th, the Terriers have killed off 32-of-34 chances (.941 percent) in six games. Not coincidentally, their record during that six-game stretch is 5-0-1.
FRESHMEN MAKING MARK ON OFFENSE: Four of the five freshmen skaters have scored at least one goal this year. The leaders are Brian Collins, who is fourth on the team with 6. The only freshman without a goal is wing Ryan Priem, who has played in 10-of-16 games. As a group, the freshmen have accounted for 12 of the team's 61 goals or 19.7 percent of the offense.
79th YEAR OF COMPETITION: This is the 79th year of intercollegiate play for the Terrier hockey team. Including this year's 11-3-2 start, the Terriers have compiled a record of 1155-655-84 for a .632 winning percentage.
DECADE OF THE TERRIERS: Since the 1989-90 season, B.U. teams have amassed an impressive 278-106-29 mark for a .708 winning percentage. They have played in the NCAA Tournament in nine of the 10 years and advanced to the Finals in seven of those years. A MILESTONE FOR PARKER: Terrier head coach Jack Parker, who marked the 600th win of his illustrious coaching career in the Terriers' 5-1 win over Colorado College on November 27th, is in his 27th season as the head coach at his alma mater. He comes into tonight's game with a lifetime record of 602-288-53 for a .666 winning percentage. Below are the top four coaches in terms of wins. Mason and Peters are still coaching, while Ceglarski has retired-Just behind Parker is Wisconsin's Jeff Sauer, who should reach career win number 600 this weekend. MOST WINS AT SAME DIVISION 1 PROGRAM: While Parker ranks fourth in total wins, he is first in Division 1 in victories at the same institution. Mason has 560 victories at Michigan State. Peters has 689 victories at Bemidji. However, they have been Division 2 prior to this season. This is their first year with a full Division 1 schedule, and they are 3-10-1. Bemidji is one of the seven teams in the newly-formed College Hockey America (CHA) league. The other members are Wayne State of Detroit, Niagara, Air Force, Army, Findlay of Ohio, and Alabama-Huntsville.
