FIRST GAME ON THE ROAD: After playing their first two games at home, the Terriers are on the road for the first time this year. They will play a total of 17 games away from home this season. This includes four neutral site games-two each at the Badger Hockey Showdown in Milwaukee, WI and the Beanpot at the FleetCenter. B.U. will play North Dakota in the first round of the Badger Showdown on December 29th and either Wisconsin or Princeton the next night. Then, in the Beanpot, B.U. will meet Northeastern in the first round on February 5th and either Harvard or BC on the 12thLast season, the Terriers were 11-10-4 on the road. This record included a 7-5-4 record on opposing team's ice and 4-5-0 on neutral ice.
FIRST LEAGUE GAME: This game will also mark the first Hockey East game of the season for the Terriers, who will be trying to defend their regular-season title. A year ago, B.U., which was picked to finish fifth in the pre-season poll, posted a 15-3-6 record as it won its sixth regular-season title in the past seven years. This year, the Terriers were picked to finish second in the pre-season poll of the coaches, while Providence was sixth. Below is the result of the poll with the number of first-place votes in parentheses.
1. Boston College (3) 72 2. BOSTON UNIVERSITY (2) 69 3. Maine (3) 68 4. New Hampshire (1) 60 5. Northeastern 38 6. Providence 37 7. UMass/Amherst 26 8. UMass/Lowell 20 9. Merrimack 15
TAPP TO START IN GOAL: Junior goalie Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC) is slated to start in net for the Terriers. This will be his third straight start this year marking the first time in his collegiate career that he will be starting three games in a row. Last year, he started back-to-back games against Ferris State (12/27) and Minnesota-Duluth (12/27) in the Silverado Shootout. Prior to the start of this season, that was the only time he started two straight games for the TerriersAs a freshman, he appeared in just six games as he backed up Michel Larocque in net. Then, last year, he played in 15 games as he alternated in goal with Rick DiPietro through the first half of the season. In the second half of the year, DiPietro saw most of the action.
TAPP VS. THE FRIARS: This will be Tapp's second career appearance against the Friars, and he is 1-0-0 against them. He came off the bench last February 19th to take over from DiPietro. DiPietro started the game and yielded three goals in the first 25:11, as the Terriers trailed 3-1. Tapp played the final 35:49, had six saves and did not allow a goal. In the meantime, B.U. scored three unanswered goals to skate off with a 4-3 win.
TAPP VS. HOCKEY EAST: His two-year record in league play is 5-2-1 with a 3.02 GAA and an .892 save percentage. Two years ago, he appeared in just three Hockey East games and was 0-1-0 with a 4.36 GAA and an .828 save percentage. His only decision was 4-2 loss to Merrimack on January 10, 1999Last year, he appeared in seven league games and was 5-1-1 with a 2.81 GAA and a .902 save percentage.
TWO LINEUP CHANGES: The Terriers are scheduled to make two changes in the lineup that played against Vermont last Saturday night. Freshman Kenny Magowan (Kelowna, BC) will return to the lineup after sitting out the Vermont game. He did play in the opener against RPI, though. With Magowan in the lineup, freshman Mark Mullen (Dorchester) will not dress. The other change has junior Jack Baker (South Boston) changing places with junior Mike Pandolfo. Baker was the left wing on the second line in the Vermont game, while Pandolfo was on the first line. Baker will skate with senior center Carl Corazzini (Framingham) and sophomore right wing John Sabo (Harding Township, NJ). These three skated together for most of last season.
GOOD NEWS ON MEYER: Sophomore defenseman Freddy Meyer (Sanbornville, NH), who was on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team last season, is expected to be back in the lineup against Merrimack next weekend. Meyer had back surgery during the summer, and it was not certain when, or if, he would be back this year. However, in the past week, he has returned to full practice mode and should be ready for next weekend.
COLLINS OFF TO QUICK START: Sophomore left wing Brian Collins (Shrewsbury, MA) is off to a quick start with 1-4-5 in his first two games. He had a goal and two assists in the season-opening 5-4 loss to RPI and then had two assists in last Saturday night's 3-1 win over VermontA year ago, Collins did not score his fifth point until the sixth game of the year. He finished the year with 13-11-24 in 42 games. He was the team's top-scoring freshman and was eighth on the team overall. His play earned him a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
COLLINS AMONG HOCKEY EAST LEADERS: Collins will come into the Providence game tied for ninth in scoring in Hockey East. However, of the league's leading scorers, Collins has played in the fewest games-two. New Hampshire's Darren Haydar leads the league with 10 points on four goals and five assists, but he has played in five games. Of the five players tied with Collins for ninth place, four have played four games, while the fifth player has played in three games. BC's Krys Kolanos (3-2-5), Mike Lephart (2-3-5), and Brian Gionta (1-4-5) and Merrimack's Stephen Moon (1-4-5) have all played in four games coming into this weekend's action. Northeastern's Scott Selig (3-2-5) has his point total in three games.
SERIES HISTORY: This will mark the 121st time since the 1926-27 season that the Terriers and Friars will be meeting, and B.U. holds the decided advantage, 75-38 with 7 ties.Over the last two years, the Friars have enjoyed excellent success over B.U with a 6-3-0 record. Two years ago, they were 5-1 vs. the Terriers, which included a 2-1 record in the Hockey East playoffs. Last year, B.U. was 2-1 vs. PC.
