Terriers Defeat Toronto In Hockey Exhibition Game
October 6, 2000 | Men's Ice Hockey
Five different players scored goals and Jason Tapp and Sean Fields combined to make 21 saves to lead the Terrier hockey team to a 5-3 win over the University of Toronto in a hockey exhibition game at Walter Brown Arena on Oct. 6.
Junior Mike Pandolfo (Burlington), sophomore Brian Collins (Shrewsbury), and sophomore Jack Baker (South Boston) all scored for B.U. in the first period, as the Terriers took a 3-1 lead at the first intermission. Steve Murphy scored Toronto's lone goal at 15:53 of the period.
Senior Nick Gillis (Winthrop) increased the Terriers' lead to 4-1 at 2:34 of the second period only to have the Varsity Blues' Brent Atkins get the goal back when he scored a shorthanded goal at 12:17.
Less than a minute later the two teams were involved in a minor altercation that resulted in a total of 11 penalties for 54 minutes. Toronto got the worst of the deal with eight of the penalties for 48 minutes. Included in the total were two 10-minute misconducts and two game misconducts.
Just 37 seconds into the third period, Terrier senior captain Carl Corazzini (Framingham) scored for the Terriers, while Tyler Middlebrook scored at 12:11 of the period for Toronto.
Tapp, a junior from Kelowna, BC, played the first two periods and allowed two goals on 14 Toronto shots. Fields, a freshman from Edmonton, Alta, played the third period and had nine saves while allowing just one goal.
"I thought we played very well considering we have been practicing just since Monday (October 2nd)," said head coach Jack Parker. "In general, I thought our speed dominated them. I was pleased with our two goalies. Tapper made some nice saves, and Sean played well after he got over his initial nervousness.
"I thought our defense played well, and we did not have either Pat Aufiero (Winchester) or Freddy Meyer (Sanbornville, NH) in the lineup," said Parker.
Aufiero is expected to return to action for next Saturday's regular-season opener against RPI, while Meyer continues to be on a week-by-week basis after recovering from off-season back surgery.
"John Cronin (Duxbury) had a helluva night on defense, and Chris Dyment (Reading) looked like an All-American," Parker said of two of his six defensemen.
"I was generally pleased with how we moved the puck," Parker went on. "In fact, I think we made the right decision with the puck 80 percent of the time.
"Overall, I think we are far ahead of where I thought we would be at this time," said Parker.
"I think we have a team that is going to play hard, is going to compete, and is going to be fun to watch," the coach concluded.
