Hockey Team Bows To Northeastern, 4-1
November 12, 2000 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Terrier hockey team continued its early-season trend of not liking to play on the road, as it dropped a 4-1 decision to host Northeastern on Sunday night (November 12).
Through the early goings this season, B.U. is 0-3-1 away from home and 2-1-0 in the friendly confines of Walter Brown Arena.
Overall, the Terriers are 2-4-1 thus far, while they are 1-3-1 in Hockey East action.
"I don't like being two under .500 in the league," Terrier head coach Jack Parker said after the loss to Northeastern. "But, this league is too tough this year, and it's going to be tough for any team to win on the road."
In Sunday night's Northeastern game, B.U. jumped to a 1-0 lead on a power play goal just 4:04 into the game. Junior Mike Pandolfo (Burlington) scored the goal-his fifth of the season, and his third in as many games.
Junior Dan Cavanaugh (Springfield) led Pandolfo on the play on a pretty pass. Sophomore defenseman Freddy Meyer (Sanbornville, NH) also earned an assist on the play.
The Terriers held their lead through the first period.
However, just 2:15 into the second period, Craig Mischler tied the game as he took advantage of a scramble in front of the net. He collected the loose puck and poked it past junior goalie Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC).
The Huskies took the lead for good on a goal by Sean McDonald at the 11-minute mark of the second period. His shot from the left faceoff circle appeared to have glanced off a Terrier defenseman past Tapp. However, when asked about the play after the game, McDonald said the puck went in cleanly off his stick. Regardless of how, the Huskies led 2-1 at the end of two periods.
The Terriers came close to tying the game early in the third period but a shot in close by junior Dan Cavanaugh (Springfield) hit the post.
As it turned out, only two goals were scored in the third period, and Northeastern scored them both.
Mischler scored the first one at 13:36 off a rebound in front of Tapp. The Terrier goalie had just made two sparkling saves but the puck lay loose just outside the crease. Mischler took advantage of it to give his team a two-goal deficit.
Chris Lynch closed out the scoring at 15:38 when he scored from in close.
"I know it's of little consolation, but I thought we played well in two of the three periods," said Parker. "I thought we played well in the first and third periods, but we just stood around on our heels in the second period.
"It was like we played at Lowell on Friday night," the coach went on. "We just didn't execute.
"But, on the plus side, I like the way we played in the third period," continued Parker. "We played hard and smart and with a lot of character.
"I was very impressed with Northeastern," he said. "They are going to win a lot of hockey games this year. I thought their goalie played well, and they covered very well in their zone. They wouldn't let us get our sticks on the puck."
