FAMILIAR FACES ON THE UMASS/LOWELL BENCH: Two members of the River Hawks' coaching staff have strong ties to the Terrier hockey program. They are Pertti Hasanen and John Hynes. Hasanen was an assistant coach at B.U. twice. His first stint was from 1988-91, while the second was from 1995-98. The highlight of his first tenure was during the 1990-91 season when the Terriers advanced to the NCAA title game. There, they lost to Northern Michigan, 8-7, in triple overtime. During his second three-year period on the staff, the Terriers had a combined record of 84-24-11,which included three straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Hynes both played and coached for the Terriers. A four-year letterman, he played on the 1993-97 Terrier teams. The four teams all advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while the 1995 team won the championship. Then, in 1997-98, he was a graduate assistant under head coach Jack ParkerBoth are in their first years on the UMass/Lowell staff. Most recently, Hasanen was the head coach of SSI Vipiteno, a member of Italy's Serie A. For the past two years, Hynes has been an assistant coach with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, MI.
