Corazzini, Meyer Lead Terriers Past UMass
December 2, 2000 | Men's Ice Hockey
Senior Carl Corazzini (Framingham) and sophomore Freddy Meyer (Sanbornville, NH) each scored a goal and an assist to lead the Terriers to a 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts/Amherst in front of a Walter Brown Arena crowd of 3469 on Saturday (Dec. 2).
The win gave the Terriers a weekend sweep of the Minutemen, as they defeated UMass, 5-2, at UMass on Friday night.
It was the first time this year the Terriers had won two straight games, but even more significant is that both wins came in league play. With the victories, B.U.'s overall record is 4-8-1, while it is 3-4-1 in the league. In the meantime, UMass slipped to 3-10-2 overall and 3-3-0 in Hockey East.
"We needed these points badly," Terrier head coach Jack Parker said after the Saturday night game. "We can now give a sigh of relief, because this was a solid weekend for us.
"We played great on the power play both nights," Parker said in looking at the statistics that showed his team was 3-of-4 on the power play on Friday night and 3-of-7 on Saturday night. "We played solid on offense and on defense, and we got solid goaltending both nights."
Junior Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC) had a personal season-high 33 saves on Friday night, while freshman Sean Fields (Edmonton, ALTA) had 21 saves on Saturday night.
"I thought Meyer and Corazzini had a helluva weekend," said Parker.
Each night, Meyer had a power play goal and an assist, while Corazzini had 2-2-4 on Friday night and 1-1-2 on Saturday night.
In Saturday night's game, the Terriers jumped to a 3-0 first period lead on goals by junior Dan Cavanaugh (Springfield), Corazzini, and sophomore Mike Bussoli (Calgary, ALTA).
UMass managed to close the gap to 3-1 on a goal by Brad Nizwantowski at 10:23 of the second period.
Meyer, who assisted on Cavanaugh's first-period goal, scored at 5:58 of the third period to increase the Terriers' lead to 4-1. Corazzini earned one of the assists on the goal.
Kris Wallis closed out the scoring for UMass at 8:20 of the third period.
"These wins couldn't have come at a better time," said Parker. "Now, hopefully, we can keep it up."
The Terriers will close out their first semester schedule next Friday night when they host the University of Maine.
