The Terrier hockey team will be going after its fifth straight win tonight (December 30th) when it meets host University of Wisconsin in the title game of the Bank One Badger Showdown in Milwaukee. B.U. advanced to the finals following a 4-3 win Friday night (December 29th) over the nation's third-ranked and defending NCAA champion University of North Dakota.
TAPP TO START IN NET: Fresh off his best save total of the season, junior Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC) will start in net tonight for the Terriers. In last night's 4-3 win over North Dakota, Tapp had 37 saves, surpassing his best previous total of 33 which he had in the 5-2 win over UMass/Amherst on December 8thHis collegiate single-game high is 42 which he had in a 3-1 win over Northeastern last February 25thThis is the first tournament championship game in which Tapp has played as a TerrierWith his win last night, Tapp has a 1-2-0 record along with an .856 save percentage and a 4.71 GAA in tournament play as a TerrierHe has won his last 3 decisions, which ties him for his best winning streak as a Terrier. He also won 3 in a row late last season. He suffered his last loss this year in a 5-3 decision at Colorado College on November 25th. In that game, he had 29 saves.
GREELEY IN; BAKER, EMERY OUT: Freshman Steve Greeley (Scituate, MA) returns to the Terrier lineup tonight after not playing the last 4 games. He played in 7 of the team's first 8 games, but has dressed just once in the last 7 games. That appearance came against Colorado College on November 25thOn the other side, junior left wing Jack Baker (South Boston, MA) and senior defenseman Keith Emery (Belmont, MA) will not dress for tonight's game as a result of second-period injuries they sustained in last night's win over North Dakota. Baker sustained a dislocated right shoulder, while Emery suffered a right hip flexor. This is the second time this year that Emery will be sidelined by an injury. He suffered a sprained left knee on his first shift against Providence on October 28th. The injury kept him on the sidelines for 5 games. Baker could be back for next weekend's series against Boston College, while Emery could be sidelined a couple of weeks.
LINEUP CHANGES: The Terriers have just a couple of lineup changes tonight. Freshman Kenny Magowan (Kelowna, BC), who played left wing on the fourth line, has been moved up to the second line to take Baker's spot. Greeley will play left wing on the fourth lineThe Terriers will play with just 5 defensemen with Emery out of action.
ONE FOR 100: With his assist in last night's game, senior center Carl Corazzini (Framingham, MA) brought his career point total to 99. He comes into tonight's game with 55 goals and 44 assists in 130 games.
SHOWDOWN HAT TRICK: The Terriers are going after their third Bank One Badger Showdown title tonight, and the second time they will be meeting the host Badgers in the title game. On December 29, 1992, Madison's J.P McKersie had 31 saves in the Terrier net, and six different players scored goals en route to a 6-3 win over the nation's sixth-ranked BadgersB.U. won its second Showdown title on December 29, 1995 when Matt Wright had a pair of goals in a 7-3 win over Notre DameAside from Wisconsin, B.U. is the only team to have won the Showdown title more than once. In the 11 previous years, the Badgers have won it 6 times. Aside from B.U., the other teams who have won the title are New Hampshire (1996), Bowling Green (1998), and North Dakota (1999).
5-0 AT SHOWDOWN; 6-2 AT BRADLEY CENTER: Last night's win improved the Terriers' record to 5-0 in the Badger Showdown, while they are 6-2 overall at the Bradley Center. At the 1992 Showdown, they defeated sixth-ranked Miami of Ohio, 4-3, in the opening round and then skated past the Badgers in the title game. At the 1995 Showdown, they eliminated Princeton, 10-2, in the first game and then rolled past Notre Dame in the title gameThey have also played three NCAA championship games here and they are 1-2.
EYEING FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN: The Terriers will be shooting for their fifth straight win tonight. After suffering through a six-game losing streak, which was the longest in head coach Jack Parker's 27-plus-year coaching career at B.U., the Terriers have put together two wins over UMass/Amherst and one each over Maine and North Dakota. The streak has improved the team's overall record to 6-8-1During this four-game stretch, the Terriers have outscored their opponents, 16-9. They have enjoyed most of their success in the first period, outscoring the 4 opponents, 8-3. They also have an edge in the third period, 6-4, while each team has scored twice in the second periodIn special teams' play, they have converted on 7-of-20 power play chances (.350 percent), while they have killed off 16-of-20 chances by their opponents (.800 percent)Individually, Carl Corazzini leads the way with 8 points on 3 goals and 5 assists. Including last night's wins, Wisconsin's head coach Jeff Sauer has a record of 629-507-49, while Terrier head coach Jack Parker has a record of 622-303-59. Sauer is ranked fourth on the all-time win list, while Parker is fifth.
PARKER VS. SAUER: This will be the 13th time these two coaches will be going against each other, and Parker has won 7 of the previous 12 matchups. He has won the last two meetings and three of the last four. The stretch began with a 10-6 win at Walter Brown Arena on January 13, 1988. Then, after Sauer's Badgers skated to a 7-2 win at Dane County Coliseum on January 6, 1989, the Terriers won the next two games.
