Terriers Skate to 3-2 Hockey East win over Maine
December 8, 2000 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Terrier hockey team scored single goals in each of three periods and junior goalie Jason Tapp (Kelowna, BC) turned aside 23 shots as B.U. skated to a 3-2 win over the University of Maine in Hockey East action at B.U. on Friday night (December 8th).
It marked the final game of the first semester for the Terriers, who closed on a high note, winning three in a row after dropping six straight. B.U., which won't play again until December 29th when they meet the University of North Dakota in the first round of the Badger Showdown in Milwaukee, is now 5-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the league. In the meantime, Maine, which had been 4-1-3 in its last eight games, is now 6-5-4 overall and 3-2-2 in Hockey East.
The Black Bears actually jumped to a 1-0 lead at 6:42 of the first period on a power play goal by Martin Kariya.
The Terriers then took over and scored three unanswered goals.
The first was scored by junior Mike Pandolfo (Burlington) at 18:38 of the first period. Pandolfo, who would later pick up an assist, took advantage of a poor clearing pass by Maine goalie Matt Yeats. Pandolfo picked up the puck and slipped it between Yeats' pads.
Freshman Frantisek Skladany (Martin, Slovakia) upped the Terriers' lead to 2-1 at 6:24 of the second period.
Senior Carl Corazzini (Framingham) brought the puck around the Maine goal and slipped it out front to Skladany who slipped the puck past Yeats.
Sophomore Freddy Meyer (Sanbornville, NY) closed out B.U.'s scoring when his slap shot from the left point beat Yeats to the far side. The goal, which proved to be the game-winner, came at 5:12 of the third period.
The Black Bears closed to within one goal when Matthias Trattnig closed out the scoring at 12:13 of the third period. But that's as close as they would get.
"I was very pleased with our effort," said Terrier head coach Jack Parker. "I thought we killed penalties very well. Their first goal was on the power play, but after that we killed their chances very well.
"I thought that Tapp had a helluva night," Parker went on. "He played real sharp and he really needed that. I also thought that Corazzini, Aufiero, and Pandolfo had a helluva night."
"I thought that B.U. did a nice job defensively tonight," said Maine head coach Shawn Walsh. "They played well through the neutral zone, and they didn't allow us to create any speed.
"I also thought that Tapp made bigger saves in the B.U. net than Yeats made in our net," continued Walsh. "I liked the B.U. team tonight, and I thought they were better than their record indicates."
