Terriers Picked To Finish Fifth In Hockey East Poll
October 2, 2001 | Men's Ice Hockey

The Terrier hockey team has been picked to finish fifth in the pre-season poll of the Hockey East coaches, while the Providence College Friars, which boast six 25-point scorers returning from last year, were tabbed as the top team in the poll of the nine league coaches.
There was a unique twist in the voting, though, as Providence did not receive a first-place vote yet earned enough points to finish atop the poll. However, the Friars were not the overwhelming choice, as they finished just one point ahead of the University of Maine, 68-67.
Actually, the Black Bears received the highest number of first-place votes with four but that was not enough to be the pre-season favorites.
Boston College, the defending league and national champions, finished third in the balloting with 61 points and was second to Maine in first-place votes, 4-3.
The University of New Hampshire was next in the pre-season balloting with one first and 61 points, while the Terriers earned the final first-place vote and 54 points, which placed them fifth. Next, in order, came UMass/Lowell with 34 points, Northeastern, 33; Merrimack, 18; and UMass/Amherst, 13.
