Softball Opens Season With Three Wins at UNC Triangle Invitational

WALNUT CREEK, N. C. -- (February 18) The Boston University Softball team opened its 2001 season at the UNC Triangle Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina on Feb. 16-18.

In five games, the Terriers posted a 3-2 record, with victories over Wright State (4-3), Youngstown State (1-0), and UNC Wilmington (8-0). B. U. fell to Liberty (4-2) and Long Island University (2-0).

Offensively, the Terriers were led by senior Leslie Linnemeyer, who went 5-for-15 with four RBI; senior Kerry Herr, who went 5-for-17 with five runs scored; and Aryn Rangel, whose two hits in the tournament were both home runs. She was tied with Linnemeyer with four RBI.

The B. U. pitching staff got off to a strong start as well, posting a 1.53 earned-run average with 34 strikeouts and only 16 hits allowed. Opposing batters hit only .137 against Terrier pitching during the three-day invitational.

Sophomores Robyn Horrick Tiffany Finateri led the Terriers on the mound. Horrick (2-0) allowed only eight hits in 17.0 innings pitched and struck out 20 batters. Her 1.24 ERA and .125 opponent batting average were both team bests. Finateri (1-2) allowed eight hits in 15.0 innings pitched and struck out 14 batters.

Boston University next travels to Tampa, Fla. to participate in the Speedline Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida, from March 8-11. The Terriers will take the field on Thursday, March 8, against Georgia Tech (1:00 p.m.) and Tennessee Tech (3:00 p.m.). On Friday, March 9, B. U. faces ninth-ranked Stanford (12:00 pm) and Penn State (4:00 p.m.).

While in Tampa, the Terriers will also meet Michigan State for two games on Tuesday, March 6 (11:00 a.m.) and Penn State for a game on Monday, March 5 (12:00 p.m.).
