October 4, 2003 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Terrier ice hockey team began its 83rd year of competition with a 6-1 victory over Toronto in a season-opening exhibition game at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday, October 4.
Sophomore forward David Van der Gulik (Abbotsford, BC) scored twice to pace the Terrier attack, which scored three second period goals to break open a 1-0 lead after one period.
Junior defenseman Bryan Miller (Wayne, NJ) got the Terriers on the board early when his shot from the right point found its way through the pads of Toronto goalie Tim Knight just 1:01 into the game. On the play, junior Frantisek Skladany (Martin, Slovakia) wrapped the puck around the boards to Miller waiting at the right point. He quickly whipped a low wrist shot towards the goal that beat Knight through the legs.
Despite outshooting Toronto 16-6, B.U. led only 1-0 at the first intermission.
Freshman forward Kenny Roche (South Boston, MA) made it 2-0 just 1:32 into the second period, banging home a rebound off of a rush by Skladany, who picked up his second assist on the play.
Another freshman, Sean Sullivan (South Huntington, NY) scored at 9:01 of the second, followed by Van der Gulik's first of the game just 1:27 later to give the Terriers a 4-0 lead after two.
Van der Gulik's second goal of the game came just 41 seconds into the third period, marking the third straight period the Terriers scored a goal within the first two minutes.
Toronto got on the board on the power play at 3:20 of the third when Chad Elliot pushed a rebound past Stephan Siwiec (Calgary, ALTA), who relieved starter Sean Fields (Edmonton, ALTA) after two periods, off of a scramble in front.
Sophomore defenseman Dan Spang (Winchester, MA) closed out the scoring, ripping a slapshot off the post and past Knight on a Terriers' power play at 7:03.
B.U. outshot Toronto for the game, 46-13. Fields had eight saves and Siwiec had four for B.U., while Knight stopped 40 shots for Toronto.
Toronto finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while B.U. was 1-for-6.
In addition to Van der Gulik's two goals, Skladany and sophomore forward John Laliberte (Saco, ME) added two assists apiece.
The Terriers' regular season begins next Saturday, October 11 when they will take on Rensselaer at Walter Brown Arena. Game time is 7 pm.
