PHILADELPHIA, Penn-Freddy Meyer, who earned First Team JOFA All-American honors as a Terrier defenseman this past season, has signed a two-year entry level contract with the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers, according to team Assistant General Manager Paul Holmgren.
During the past season for the Terriers, Meyer, who captained the hockey team to a 25-14-3 record and a berth in the NCAAs, enjoyed his finest season under head coach Jack Parker. Playing in 36 of the team's 42 games, he had 5 goals and 16 assists for 21 points. His assist and point totals marked the highest of his collegiate career. Overall, he was the team's second-leading scorer among the defensemen, while he was third on the team overall in assists and ninth overall in points.
In addition to becoming just the 12th Terrier defenseman to earn First Team All-American honors, he was also First Team All-Hockey East and All-New England. He then capped off his collegiate career by receiving the Gordon "Mickey" Cochrane Award as the University's top male athlete.
Meyer played in 126 games during this collegiate career and had 17 goals and 45 assists for 62 points. He also set a school record with 288 penalty minutes, eclipsing the former mark of 283, set by Jack O'Callahan from 1975-79.
"Freddy Meyer is a tough, hard-nosed kid," Holmgren said in making the announcement. "He is pretty good with the puck and a real competitive kid. We look forward to having him in the system as well.
"It is reasonable to expect that (Meyer) will play with the (Flyers' American Hockey League Philadelphia) Phantoms next season," Holmgren said. "We feel that the Phantoms are a real lifeline for the Flyers and the more young players that we can get in there developing, the better chance we have of making the Flyers stronger down the road."
