Strong Efforts All Around As Softball Sweeps Dartmouth

April 21, 2005

GAME ONE - Boston University 1, Dartmouth 0

GAME TWO - Boston University 7, Dartmouth 6

BOSTON - Boston University sophomore Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) fell one out short of her first career no-hitter but came away with a 1-0 victory in game one of a doubleheader sweep of Dartmouth on Thursday, April 21 at the B.U. Softball Field. The Terriers came up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 6-1 deficit and take game two, 7-6.

It was the second time in two days that B.U. won a game in the final inning. The Terriers also scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 4-2 win over Boston College on Wednesday. The two wins over Dartmouth extended their season-high winning streak to five games. They've won seven of their last eight games.

B.U. is now 11-0 all time against Dartmouth in softball. The Terriers have outscored the Big Green, 53-11, in those games. The totals include seven shutout victories.

GAME ONE - BOSTON UNIVERSITY 1, DARTMOUTH 0 Freeman (6-8) allowed three hits and a lone single in the game. The base hit, a single by Susie Fox, came with two outs in the seventh and final inning. Freshman Jenna Grapensteter (Bothell, Wash.) came on in relief after the hit and threw one pitch, inducing a fly to center to end the game. She earned her team-leading third save of the season.

The Terriers scored the only run of the game in the third inning. Junior Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.) led off the inning with a deep drive to left that was misplayed by Fox and resulted in Alley standing at third with no outs. Senior shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) bunted for a base hit, barely beating a throw that got away from the Dartmouth fielders and allowed Alley to score, unearned, from third.

There were a total of three hits in the game and Haas had two of them to extend her hitting streak to seven games. She would go hitless in the second game.

Lost in the results was a strong outing by Dartmouth starter Angela Megaw (3-6), who tossed a complete-game two hitter.

GAME TWO - BOSTON UNIVERSITY 7, DARTMOUTH 6 Dartmouth seemingly took control of the game on a fifth-inning grand slam by Kelly Fry, giving the Big Green a 6-1 lead. B.U. responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs of its own, the biggest hit coming from junior pinch hitter Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill.), who laced a two-run double down the left field line to make the score 6-5.

The score remained 6-5 in favor of the Big Green heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, when B.U. worked its late-inning magic once again. Alley, 0-for-4 heading into her at bat, ripped a game-tying home run to deep center to tie the game at 6-6. McDonald proved to be the hero for the second time on the day as she doubled to center to score senior catcher Jenny Shields (Simi Valley, Calif.) all the way from first with the game-winning run. McDonald went 2-for-2 with three RBI after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the fifth.

Fry went 3-for-3 with four RBI for Dartmouth. Grapensteter (4-1) came on for B.U. sophomore starter Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) to pitch two innings of scoreless relief.

B.U. returns to America East play when it travels to Burlington, Vt. this weekend for a three-game series against the University of Vermont. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game all begin at noon.
