ORONO, Maine - Behind a second-place finish by senior Marisa Ryan, the Boston University women's cross country team claimed its third straight America East championship on Saturday afternoon at the University of Maine. On the men's side, New Hampshire claimed the team title with the Terriers finishing in fourth place.
The Terriers continued their dominance on the women's side, as they have now won 15 of the conference's 18 league titles, including 10 of the last 11. BU's 47 points was well ahead of runner-up New Hampshire (77). Stony Brook (89), Vermont (110), Binghamton (134) and Maine (140) earned third- through sixth-place finishes, while Albany (152), UMBC (198) and Hartford (257) rounded out the nine-team event.
Ryan's time of 17:08.4 was second only to UNH's Catherine Parker, who finished the course in 16:50.3. The Terriers were bolstered by two other top-10 performances, as senior Abbey Sadowski (17:28.8) finished fifth and graduate student Claire Robson (17:50.2) came in ninth. Ryan, Sadowski and Robson all earned all-conference honors for their efforts.
BU all but sealed its third straight title when freshman Erin Legasse (18:02.4), senior Allison Malenovsky (18:03.0) and senior Anne Wighton (18:11.7) finished behind one another in 15th, 16th and 17th place, repectively. Junior Gwyneth Stokes was the last Terrier to figure in the scoring, finishing 19th with a time of 18:13.9.
In the men's race, UNH used five top-20 performers to earn 58 points and narrowly outpaced Stony Brook University (61), host University of Maine (62) and BU (70). University of Vermont (154), defending-champion UMBC (175) and University at Albany (178) finished fifth through seventh, respectively, while Binghamton University (183) and University of Hartford (269) rounded out the nine-team field.
Two Terriers earned all-conference honors, as senior Nick Goodman (24:49.7) was the fourth runner to cross the line and classmate Phil Shaw placed 10th with a time of 25:10.1. Freshman Eric Ashe was the third BU runner to finish the race and 14th overall at 25:28.4.
Senior Dan Siezckiewicz earned a top-20 finish, tying for 19th in a time of 25:35.9. Junior David Proctor (22nd, 25:43.9), freshman David Polgar (32nd, 26:09.3) and junior Pat Hoye (33rd, 26:11.6) rounded out the scoring for the Terriers.
