BOSTON - After stopping a combined 56 of the 59 shots he faced in a pair of contests this past weekend, senior John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) has been named the Hockey East Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, as was announced by the league office on Monday. The Terriers earned a pair of ties in league play, including a 2-2 draw against top-ranked Maine.
Curry posted a 1.38 goals against average to go along with a .949 save percentage over the weekend, making a season-high 34 saves in a 1-1 road tie against UMass Lowell before recording 22 saves on Saturday against Maine at Agganis Arena.
The senior netminder held the potent Maine offense scorless for the final 58 minutes of the contest, including a huge save on a breakaway with 12 seconds left in overtime to preserve the tie and end the Black Bears' season-opening seven-game win streak.
Following his standout performances, Curry's goals against average for the season was lowered to 2.09, while his save percentage increased to .923.
The Terriers (2-1-3, 2-1-2 HE), who were ranked eighth in both national polls that were released on Monday, will return to action on Friday, Nov. 10, when they visit No. 13 New Hampshire (4-2-0, 2-1-0 HE). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
