Curry Named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week

March 13, 2006

BOSTON – After backstopping the No. 3 Boston University men’s ice hockey team to a Hockey East Quarterfinal sweep of Massachusetts, junior netminder John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) was named the Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on March 13. It is the fourth such honor for Curry, while he also earned the league’s Player of the Week once and was January’s recipient of the Goaltender of the Month award.

The junior goalie stopped 57-of-59 shots over the weekend en route to two victories and a berth in the Hockey East Semifinals. Further, both of the goals he allowed came with a UMass two-man advantage. Curry now holds a 2.21 goals-against average and .919 save percentage with a 21-7-4 record.

Two other Terriers were also recognized for their efforts last week, as seniors John Laliberte (Saco, Maine), Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.) and David Van der Gulik (Abbotsford, B.C.) all made their way onto the Honor Roll.

Laliberte had a five-point weekend (2-3—5), while setting up the game-winner on Friday and scoring the power-play game-winner on Saturday. Meanwhile, Van der Gulik netted his second career hat trick on Friday, then set up the game-winner on Saturday, and blueliner Spang totaled three assists over the weekend, including two on the power play.

The Terriers return to action on Friday in the Hockey East Semifinals versus New Hampshire. The game is set for 5:00 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Garden and can be seen live on NESN.
