CATONSVILLE, Md. – Freshman infielders Brooke Hudson and Melissa Dubay each homered for the second consecutive day to lead the Boston University softball team to a 7-4 victory over UMBC Saturday afternoon. The Terriers, who were swept in a doubleheader Friday, salvaged the final game of the three-game series and improved to 20-20 overall, 6-5 in America East play. The Retrievers fell to 37-12, 7-4.

In the second inning, with the game scoreless, Liz Alley and Dubay hit consecutive one-out singles. After a Molly Gallagher groundout, Hudson hit a three-run home run to left to stake the Terriers to a 3-0 lead. Hudson, who hit her first career homer – a grand slam – in Friday’s 11-7 game-two loss, went 2-3 on the afternoon and was 6-7 with seven RBI in the final two games of the series.

The Terriers increased their lead to 4-0 with an unearned run in the fourth inning, and went up 5-1 when Brandi Shields roped an RBI double down the right field line in the top of the sixth.

UMBC’s Reilly Ward hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame to cut the BU lead to 5-3, but Dubay got the runs back for the Terriers with a two-run home run of her own in the top of the seventh. The blast gave BU a 7-3 edge and Dubay now has three homers in her career, including two in the last two days.

Shayne Lotito earned her first career win, allowing one run on three hits in 4.0 IP. Lotito improved to 1-2 on the season and she also went 1-4 at the plate. Melody Popravak tossed the final three innings, allowing three runs on four hits to earn the save.

Dubay went 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Catcher Christy Leath was 2-4, while Alley was 2-3 with two runs scored. The Terriers banged out 12 hits on the afternoon.

BU returns to action next week with a pair of non-conference road games. The Terriers visit Connecticut on April 18 at 4 p.m., and visit Boston College on April 20 at 3 p.m.
