Terriers Honored at Annual Friends of Hockey Banquet

BOSTON – The success of the 2005-06 Boston University men’s ice hockey team was recognized at the 43rd annual Friends of Hockey Awards Banquet, held at Agganis Arena on April 15. Junior goaltender John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) and senior forward David Van der Gulik (Abbotsford, B.C.) were named co-MVPs, while junior defenseman Sean Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) was selected as the captain of the 2006-07 Terrier hockey team.

Among the other award winners were sophomore Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who took home the Ed Carpenter Award for leading the team in scoring; junior Kenny Roche (South Boston, Mass.), who was named the Most Improved Player; and seniors John Laliberte (Saco, Maine) and Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.), who shared the Friends/Albert Sidd Unsung Hero Award.

Senior co-captain Brad Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) was a double-award winner, as he won both the Bennet McGinnis Award for spirit and the Kevin Mutch Memorial Award as the MVP of the BU vs. BC series.

Curry was also a dual recipient, as he garnered the Regina Eilberg Memorial Scholarship for having the best GPA among entering seniors. Finally, junior Kevin Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y.) captured the Clifford Fitzgergald Scholarship as the top junior/senior defenseman who combined on-ice talent with academic success.

In addition to Laliberte, Spang, Van der Gulik and Zancanaro, the Terriers bid adieu to fellow classmates Jekabs Redlihs (Riga, Latvia) and Stephan Siwiec (Calgary, Alta.).

The Terrier hockey team finished the 2005-06 campaign with a 26-10-4 record, including a 21-3-2 mark in the final 26 games. In addition, BU captured the Beanpot trophy and both the Hockey East Regular-Season and Tournament Championships, while advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals.
