Curry, Spang Earn All-New England Honors
April 6, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON – Junior goaltender John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) and senior defenseman Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.), both of the Boston University men’s ice hockey team, were today named to the Division I All-New England Team, as announced by the New England Hockey Writers Association. Curry is a two-time New England honoree, while Spang is being recognized in the region for the first time.
Curry, who is one of just two players on this year’s all-star team to be earning a second-consecutive selection, ended the 2005-06 season with a 24-8-4 record and a trio of shutouts. The junior netminder ranks second nationally with 24 victories, while he was among the country’s finest all season long in winning percentage (.722), goals-against average (2.24) and save percentage (.918). Additionally, he was the runner-up for Hockey East Player of the Year award for the second-consecutive season, while being selected as the league’s First Team All-Star goaltender.
Spang, who led the BU defensive corps in holding opponents to 2.4 goals per game this season, is making his first appearance on the New England team. The local Winchester product enjoyed his best-ever season offensively, as he led the team and the league and is 11th in the country with points per game among defensemen (9-22—31). Spang also earned Hockey East First Team All-Star status, was runner-up for the league’s Best Defensive Defenseman award and was a member of the Hockey East All-Tournament Team.
The New England Hockey Writers all-stars and special award winners will be honored at the annual banquet on Thursday, April 13 at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass. For tickets, please call John Gruppo in the Northeastern Ticket Office at 617-373-7409.
