BOSTON – Boston University senior defenseman Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.) and junior goaltender John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) were both named RBK Division I Ice Hockey All-Americans, as announced by the American Hockey Coaches Association on April 7. Spang made the East First Team, becoming the 37th first-team selection in BU history, while Curry earned a spot of the East Second Team.
BU was one of just four teams to have multiple All-Americans, as Boston College garnered four, Wisconsin had three and Maine had two. Meanwhile, Hockey East and the WCHA each boasted nine selections, while the ECACHL and the CCHA each had three.
Spang had a breakout senior season for the Terriers, putting up an impressive point total while also leading the BU defense that allowed just 2.4 goals per game to rank 14th in the nation (2.1 goals per game in the last 23 games, with a 19-2-2 record). Offensively, he led BU blueliners and tied for fourth overall on the team with 31 points (9-22), while ranking second in assists. Additionally, he was 11th in the country in points per game among defensemen (0.78), while leading Hockey East in the same category.
For his efforts, Spang was also selected as a Hockey East First Team All-Star, was runner-up for the league’s Best Defensive Defenseman and earned spots on the Hockey East All-Tournament Team and the Division I All-New England Team.
Curry ended the 2005-06 season with a 24-8-4 record and a trio of shutouts. The junior netminder ranked second nationally with 24 victories, while he was among the country’s finest all season long in winning percentage (.722), goals-against average (2.24) and save percentage (.918). He finished out the season only losing twice in 24 games, boasting a 20-2-2 record, 2.00 GAA, and .921 save percentage.
In addition, Curry was the runner-up for Hockey East Player of the Year award for the second-consecutive season, while being selected as the league’s First Team All-Star goaltender and earning a spot on the All-New England Team.
