ORONO, Maine - The Boston University women's ice hockey team snapped its three-game losing streak Tuesday at Maine, defeating the Black Bears, 3-2. Juniors Nicki Wiart and Erin Seman and sophomore Sarah Appleton each scored en route to the Terriers' first conference win of the season. Two of Boston University's goals came on the power play, which had been a point of weakness for the Terriers earlier in the season.
Boston University's (3-8-2, 1-2-0 HE) defense kept Maine (1-12-1, 0-4-1 HE) in check all evening, holding the Black Bears to 13 shots in the game and only two in the first period. The Terriers also kept their skaters on the ice, surrendering only three power-play opportunities. Junior Allyse Wilcox only had to make 11 saves to earn the team's third win of the season. Wilcox has been in goal for each of the team's wins.
Wiart got the Terriers on the board in the first period, converting a power play opportunity for her second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Kelley Karnan with 1:03 left in the period. The assist was Karnan's first point of the season.
Appleton put BU ahead 2-0 with her fourth score of the season, which ranks her second on the team behind sophomore Melissa Anderson. Appleton scored off an assist from freshman Lauren Cherewyk with 11:42 left in the second period and the Terriers on the power play.
But the Black Bears refused to quit, striking back a mere 1:02 later to cut BU's lead to one, as senior Jennie Gallo scored off assists from junior Robyn Law and senior Kim Meagher with 10:40 left in the second period.
Maine drew the score even with 7:35 remaining in the second period, as sophomore Taryn Peacock notched her third goal of the season on the power play off assists from junior Vanessa Vani and Gallo.
Seman scored late in the third to put the Terriers ahead for good and earn the team's first conference win of the season. Anderson and junior Amanda Shaw combined on the assists as Seman notched her third goal of the season with 7:04 remaining in the game.
The Terriers out-shot Maine 40-13, holding the Black Bears to two shots in the first period, six in the second and five in the third. 21 of BU's shots came while on the power play. Junior Genevieve Turgeon had 37 saves in the game.
BU sees conference action again in its next game, as the team visits New Hampshire on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m.
