Tyler Morris Named America East Rookie Of The Week

February 5, 2007

BOSTON—Red-shirt freshman guard Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned his first America East Rookie of the Week honors after averaging 17.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in two Terrier men's basketball wins last week.

Morris shot 11-of-23 in the two games and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, while scoring in double figures in both a 66-55 victory over Maine on Jan. 31 and a 59-51 win against Hartford on Feb. 3.

His 19 points against the Black Bears were a team-best, marking the seventh time this season the freshman has led the Terriers in scoring. Seven of those points came during a decisive 23-3 BU run that put the game out of reach for UM. Morris also had four rebounds and two assists in the game. He chipped in 15 points and five rebounds in the triumph over Hartford, but his three biggest points came late in the game when he banked in a jumper while fouled and hit the ensuing free throw to put BU up by five, 52-47, with 59 seconds left. The Hawks got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Morris is tied with fellow freshman Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) for top team scoring average, with 14.2 points per game. Morris averages 3.1 rebounds per game. The guard makes 48.3 percent of his 3-pointers to lead the conference and is also fourth in the league in free throw percentage (81.3 percent; 52-for-64).

He has started all 21 games, and the freshman has scored in double figures a team-best 15 times, including three 20-plus point efforts against Harvard (22 pts), Rhode Island (a career-high 25 pts), and Albany (21 pts).

Boston University is 9-12 overall and 6-3 in the conference. With the two wins last week, the Terriers have now won six of their last eight games, and they look to make it three in a row tonight against the America East’s top-ranked team, the Vermont Catamounts, at 7 p.m. in Burlington, Vt.
