Strait Named Hockey East Rookie of the Week
March 12, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - After helping Boston University reach the Hockey East semifinals with a quarterfinal series victory over Vermont, freshman defenseman Brian Strait (Waltham, Mass.) has been named the league's Superskills Hockey Rookie of the Week, as announced on Monday. This is the second time that Strait has earned the weekly honor this season.
Strait made contributions on both ends of the ice, allowing the Terriers to rally back from a loss in the series opener with back-to-back wins.
After the Catamounts opened the best-of-three series with a 3-2 victory on Thursday, the Terriers began their comeback with a 2-0 triumph on Friday, as Strait provided the key insurance goal with 6:08 remaining in regulation.
Following a pass from sophomore Jason Lawrence, the freshman blue-liner wristed a high shot through traffic from the right point that eldued UVM netminder Joe Fallon, giving BU a two-goal cushion. On the other end of the ice, Strait limited the Catamounts' scoring chances to allow the Terriers to tie the school record for shutouts in a season with eight.
Strait has appeared in 34 of the Terriers' 37 contests this season, totaling three goals and three assists to go along with a +4 rating.
BU, the No. 3 seed, will make its sixth straight appearance in the Hockey East semifinals when it faces arch-rival Boston College, the No. 2 seed, on Friday, March 16, at TD Banknorth Garden. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
