BOSTON – Sophomore Melissa Dubay was 7-for-8 with two triples, one home run and seven RBI and freshman Rachel Moeller collected four hits with a pair of homers and nine RBI, as the Boston University softball team (23-8, 7-1 America East) took two from Maine (17-21, 2-6 AE) on Wednesday at BU Softball Field. BU opened with an 8-1 victory, before cruising to a 15-5 win in the finale.
Sophomore Shayne Lotito picked up four hits, while senior Chiya Louie and sophomores Brooke Hudson and Christy Leath each had three hits. In addition, Louie and Leath drove in two runs.
Freshman Megan Currier earned the win in both games, improving to 11-2 on the season. Currier pitched a complete-game in the first contest striking out two batters and scattering five hits over seven innings. The Torrance, Calif., native then came in for senior Brittany Detwiler in the third inning of game two to earn the victory.
In game one, the Terriers broke a 1-1 deadlock in the second inning on Moeller’s first home run of the day, plating Dubay. They tacked on three more in the fifth with Moeller’s three-run home run to center field with sophomore Megan Coughlin and Dubay scoring on the play. The Terriers added runs in the sixth and seventh frames to cap off the scoring at 8-1.
After giving up one run in the first inning, Currier shut down the Black Bears offense allowing only three hits in the final six innings.
In game two, BU opened the flood gates in the first inning with six runs on four hits. Moeller drove in three on a double to right field to bring Dubay, freshman Rachel Hebert and Louie home. Maine answered in the second inning registering four runs and five hits. Over the next four innings, BU moved five across the plate then exploded in the seventh inning with four runs backed by Dubay’s three-run home run and Louie’s team-leading ninth homer.
For the day the Terriers were 10-for-11 in stolen bases and senior Brandi Shields was 4-for-4. The Terriers out hit Maine 29-15, while allowing just six earned runs.
Tomorrow's game at Brown has been cancelled due to impending weather. The Terriers will host Stony Brook on Saturday, April 14 in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
