Game One | Game Two | Season Stats

BOSTON – The Boston University softball team (26-9, 10-2 America East) reclaimed first place in the America East Conference with two wins over UMBC (26-12, 9-4) on Saturday afternoon at BU Softball Field. Freshman Rachel Hebert knocked out a game-winning two-run blast in the opening game to give the Terriers the 2-1 victory and recorded five RBI on 2-for-2 hitting in game two as BU won, 9-7.

Hebert was 3-for-3 on the day with one triple, one homer and seven RBI. She provided the two-run homer in the first game that gave the Terriers the win and followed up with a two-hit performance in game two. In the second game, her triple down the left line drove in three runs that gave the Terriers the early 7-0 lead. But, UMBC rallied in the third inning with five runs and tacked on two more in fourth to knot the score at seven. Her sacrifice fly out to right field brought home the game winner and she added an insurance run in the sixth with a single up the middle.

In game one, UMBC struck first on a sacrifice fly out to center field. However, BU came back with a two-run fourth inning when Hebert went yard for the ninth time this season.

After allowing one run in the second inning, freshman Megan Currier shut down the Retrievers’ offense giving up just one hit in the final five innings of work. Currier improved to 13-2 on the season.

In game two, the Terriers came storming out of the gates with a four-run first inning. Sophomores Christy Leath and Melissa Dubay each drove in a run and sophomore Megan Coughlin brought home two runs on a double down the right line.

BU continued its offensive dominance in the second with Hebert’s three-run triple down the right line. However, UMBC would not go down quietly.  In the third inning, it rallied with two outs to score five runs on six hits. In the fourth, the Retrievers drew to within one on a solo homer and tied the game on a walk.

Following the Retrievers’ rally, Hebert’s sacrifice fly out to left field reclaimed the lead. Freshman Rachel Moeller came in to pitch the next two innings, striking out two batters and allowing one hit while picking up her second win of the season. Senior Brittany Detwiler pitched the final 1.2 innings and earned her first save of the season.

BU and UMBC will complete the series on Sunday at noon.
