The Boston University men's basketball team struggled offensively throughout the game as the Terriers (5-13, 2-4 America East) fell, 62-40, to visiting UMBC (13-7, 5-2 AE) Tuesday evening in Case Gymnasium.
Red-shirt sophomore Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.) led BU with 12 points, and freshman John Holland (Bronx, N.Y.) followed with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds to be named BU's America East Player of the Game. UMBC's Cavell Johnson led all players with 13 points. Teammate Darryl Proctor had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds to be UMBC's AE Player of the Game.
The teams tied it up early in the first, 5-5 at 16:55, on a jumper by Terrier Valdas Sirutis (Gargzdai, Lithuania), but the Retrievers went on a 20-4 run over the next 13 minutes to take a 25-9 advantage with 3:59 remaining in the first half on two free throws by Matt Spadafora. UMBC went into the locker room up, 30-16, at the half.
BU shot just 17.9 percent from the floor for the first half (5-for-28) and only marginally better in the second (32.1 pct. (9-for-28)) to shoot 25.0 percent for the game. UMBC shot 42.6 percent (23-for-54) for the game, off-setting an 11.8 3-point field goal percentage (2-for-17).
The Terriers couldn't mount a rally in the second half, cutting UMBC's lead to single digits once, 36-28, on a layup by red-shirt junior Matt Wolff (Walpole, Mass.) at 14:42.
Boston University returns to action on Friday, Jan. 25 when the Terriers host Vermont at Agganis Arena at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
