BOSTON -
In its first America East action of the season, the Boston University men's basketball team travels to upstate New York to play Binghamton on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. The Terriers bring a three-game win streak against the Bearcats into Sunday's contest.
The Terriers lead the all-time series 10-3, winning the first seven games and the last three. Boston U and Binghamton began their rivalry in 2002, the year the Bearcats joined the America East. The Terriers completed the season sweep of Binghamton last year, winning both regular season games and the first round of the America East tournament.
Binghamton started the year losing six of its first seven games but has rallied to win three of the last five, including a 12-point victory over George Washington - a team defeated Boston U by nearly the same margin in November. Sophomore forward Lazar Trifunovic leads Binghamton with 16.1 ppg and 8.8 rpg. Senior guard Richard Forbes is second with 16.1 ppg. After starting the first 12 games, Forbes came off the bench in the loss to Vermont. Binghamton is 4-2 at home but 0-7 on the road.
Sophomore guard Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) is BU's leading scorer with 18.6 points per game. Classmates Carlos Strong (Portland, Maine) and Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ont.) are the other two Terriers in double figures. Strong averages 14.4 ppg, while Brittain averages 10.8 ppg and a team-best 6.3 rpg. He is shooting 55.7 percent from the floor (49-for-88) to rank third in the America East.
Lowe led BU with a game-best 20 points in a 62-59 loss to Holy Cross last Wednesday in Worcester. The Terriers did not score a field goal for the first five and a half minutes but overcame that to contend with the Crusaders, fighting a see-saw battle throughout the second half that saw six ties and eight lead changes and each team more than doubling its first-half point total. Holy Cross took a 29-21 lead coming out of halftime on two threes, but BU stayed with the Crusaders and retook the lead at 12:46 on a three-point play by Strong after he was fouled on a dunk. The teams traded narrow one- and two-point leads for the next seven minutes before Holy Cross took the largest advantage either team maintained in the second half, 56-49. The Terriers cut it to two points, 58-56, but the Crusaders held on for the win.
Boston University plays its first home game in a month, hosting UNH on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
