The Boston University softball team will host its home opener on Thursday, March 26 when it takes on St. Peter's at BU Softball Field in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Terriers enter with a 9-11 overall record, while the Peahens (0-14) are searching for their first victory of the season. Thursday's contest will mark the first meeting between the two teams.
BU returned to action on Wednesday after a ten-day break and split with Central Connecticut in Willimantic, Conn. The Terriers fell in the first contest, 4-0, before earning a 7-5 victory in the second game. Sophomore Rachel Moeller was the hero in the win, driving in BU's final four RBI - including the game winner - with one home run and a single. Junior Melissa Dubay put the Terriers on the board with a long ball and a double in the first and third. Freshman Kelley Engman earned the win in the pitcher's circle and sophomore Megan Currier picked up the save, retiring the final three CCSU batters. In the first game, BU was shutout for just the third time this season.
The Terriers are third in the America East in batting (.254), second in fielding (.966), and second in stolen bases (19). Junior Melissa Dubay leads the team and is third in the conference in batting (.407). In addition, she ranks second in the league in RBI (16).
Sophomore Cassidi Hardy leads the Terriers' hurlers with a 3.21 ERA. She has pitched three shutouts and gone the distance in six games. Engman is close behind with a 3.74 ERA.
The Peahens have struggled this year, starting the season on a 14-game skid. Most recently, St. Peter's dropped a doubleheader to Boston College and fell, 10-2, to Harvard. Following Thursday's twinbill, the Peahens will travel to La Salle on April 1, before hosting their home opener on April 2 against Drexel.
On the offensive front, Megan Papierniak has been St. Peter's most prolific batter, with a .278 batting average, five RBI, one home run and four doubles. Jackie Cross is the Peahens' other batter hitting above .200 with a .222 clip and two RBI.
The Terriers will continue their homestand with Vermont on Saturday, March 29 in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
