Game One | Game Two
BOSTON -
Junior Melissa Dubay was 3-for-6 with one homer and two RBI as the Boston University softball team (13-11, 2-0 AE) took two games from Vermont (5-14, 0-2 AE) on Saturday afternoon at BU Softball Field. Sophomore Cassidi Hardy was the winning pitcher in BU's 7-1 triumph, and classmate Megan Currier went the distance in game two - a 2-0 victory - to earn her second shutout of the season. BU and UVM will conclude the season series on Sunday, March 30 at noon.
Freshman Melanie Delgado hit her first career home run in the Terriers' 2-0 victory and was 2-for-4 on the day. Junior Shayne Lotito collected two hits to go along with five stolen bases and classmate Nora Militz' picked up two RBI on a double in the second game.
Hardy struck out seven batters in a complete-game performance, allowing three hits, no earned runs and five walks. Currier kept the Catamounts' bats quiet, giving up just two hits in seven innings, while striking out five.
After issuing two walks to start the game, Hardy settled into a rhythm striking out the next two batters and forcing a ground out to third base to escape the top half of the first with runners in scoring position. In the top of the third, Hardy again got herself out of a jam, striking out the next batter and catching a pop out to keep the game scoreless.
In the bottom of the third, the Terriers' offense came alive as Delgado scored after picking up BU's first hit of the game, then advancing on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a wild pitch. One inning later, sophomore Rachel Hebert upped the lead on a stand-up double to center field, plating Dubay, and then scoring on the next hit by Militz. BU tacked on four more in the fifth on three straight doubles from junior Christy Leath, Dubay and junior Brooke Hudson and a sacrifice fly out by Militz.
In the sixth frame, Vermont spoiled Hardy's shutout bid with a run on a throwing error.
Delgado got things started in the second game with her first career home run with a long shot to center field in the bottom of the third and Dubay added a run in the fourth with a homer to left field.
Currier and the defense took over from there, allowing just two runners to get in scoring position through the final three innings and retiring the Catamounts in order in the seventh.
BU and UVM will conclude the series on Sunday at BU Softball Field with a noon start.
