BOSTON -
The Boston University softball team (21-12) handed Connecticut (15-15) a 5-1 loss on Thursday afternoon at BU Softball Field. Senior Molly Gallagher led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance in the batter's box with three RBI, while freshman April Setterlund drove in two runs on two hits. Freshman hurler Kelley Engman earned the win to improve to 5-4 in the circle. BU will continue its homestand this weekend in a three-game series with Hartford.
Engman went the distance, allowing no earned runs, six hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts. Also driving in a run was freshman Melanie Delgado with a double in the fourth inning, while the Terriers' defense continued to shine, turning two double plays during the game. BU maintains its perfect home record with the victory.
Connecticut threatened in the second with a runner on third, but smart defense held the base runner there with back-to-back outs. In the bottom half of the frame, BU loaded the bags on an error and back-to-back walks, and on the next at-bat Gallagher drove in two on a single to shortstop.
In the fourth, Delgado drove in junior Brooke Hudson on a double to center field and Gallagher placed a perfect bunt through the middle on the next at-bat that allowed Delgado to come home from second base.
UConn got on the board in the fifth following an error that allowed the Huskies to plate one; however, Setterlund tacked one final run in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle to put the game away.
BU will host America East foe Hartford on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
