CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -
The Boston University softball team was edged, 1-0, by Harvard on Thursday afternoon at Soldiers Field. Freshman April Setterlund collected two hits in three at-bats; however, the Terriers were unable to put one across the plate as they fall to 26-17 on the season, while Harvard improves to 22-18 overall. BU will host Binghamton this weekend in a three-game series beginning on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m.
Freshman Kelley Engman (6-5) was charged with the loss after surrendering just one run. She allowed six hits, two walks and struck out three in the complete-game effort. Also collecting hits for the Terriers were freshmen Caitlin Rentler and Melanie Delgado.
BU kept the game scoreless in the third with strong defense when Delgado threw to Rentler at home that got the lead runner out. BU then threatened in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third after a sacrifice bunt from Setterlund; however, a close call at first base ended the frame.
Harvard broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single through the left side, which proved to be the game-winner. Engman prevented any further runs from crossing with a strike out to end the frame; however, the Terriers were only able to get two more runners on base in the sixth and Harvard retired all three BU batter's in the seventh the secure the victory.
BU will host Binghamton in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m. and will conclude the series on Sunday at noon. Prior to the game on Sunday, the Terriers will honor their senior co-captains in a pre-game ceremony.
