Top Terrier Rewards Students Visit Hartford on Road Trip
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Boston University men's basketball stormed out to a 16-4 lead and never looked back, as the Terriers defeated Hartford, 72-47, on Saturday afternoon in Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion. John Holland led all players with 21 points, and Corey Lowe had 10 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals to give BU (11-9, 6-2 AE) its fifth straight victory and hand the Hawks (6-17, 2-7 AE) their sixth consecutive loss on the season.
Named BU's America East player of the game, Holland almost outscored Hartford in the first half by himself with 15 points, including three treys, to put the Terriers ahead, 34-19. The Hawks only hit 6-for-31 (19.4%) with their season-leading scorer Jarret von Rosenberg making half of them for seven points.
During the second stazna, UH cut the deficit to as low as 13 three separates times - 13:06 (47-34), 8:51 (53-40) and 8:01 (55-42). On the third occasion, the Terriers immediately responded with a layup by Scott Brittain and finished the game with a 17-5 run to earn their first win in Hartford since 2006.
The Terriers entered the conference slate having hit 50 percent or better of their shots in only one game but have now reached the mark three times in the last eight league games. In the second half, BU made 15-of-25 attempts from the field to finish the game 28-of-55 for 50.9 percent, while holding UH to 27.4 percent the entire game on 17-of-62 attempts.
Besides Holland and Lowe, two other Terriers finished in double-figures. Freshman Jake O'Brien contributed 11 of his 16 in the second half, and Brittain added 13. UH's AE player of the game, Morgan Sabia, was the lone Hawk in double-figures with 12 points, as von Rosenberg failed to hit a single shot in the second stazna.
BU's defense was making plays all over the court, posting 14 steals and seven blocks. with Brittain tying a career-high at five. The two teams finished dead even in rebounds, 39-39, with UH's Michael Turner recording a game-high nine boards. The contest marked the third time this season that BU held an opponent below 50 points.
The Terriers conclude their three-game road trip Monday night at UMBC (Feb. 2) with tip-off set for 7 p.m. before returning to Agganis Arena on Thursday (Feb. 5).
