BOSTON – Boston University junior Jillian Kirchner has been named the Pure Hockey Player of the Week, the Hockey East office announced Monday. Kirchner earned her first ever conference Player of the Week honors after notching a goal and two assists in two games against Ohio State this past weekend.
The junior forward helped get the Terriers on the board in the season opener, assisting on classmate Lauren Cherewyk’s goal in the second period that put the hosts up 1-0 heading into the third. Pinned up against the boards in front of the Buckeye bench, Kirchner slid the puck to a streaking Cherewyk, who fired from the left point for BU’s first goal of the 2009-10 season. A late Buckeye goal leveled the score at 1-1 and scoreless overtime saw the game end in a 1-1 tie.
In game two, Kirchner tallied her first goal of the season, corralling a pass from freshman Jill Cardella in front of the net and jamming home the puck to knot the score at 1-1 in the opening period. Kirchner notched her second assist of the weekend, finding Jenelle Kohanchuk in a skirmish in front of the net to push the score to 4-2 after two periods of play. Late penalties enabled the Buckeyes to even the score at 4-4 and despite good pressure from the Terriers, the game ended in a 4-4 tie.
Kirchner leads the team in assists (2), points (3), and is tied for first in goals (1), after the first weekend of regular season action. As a freshman in 2007-08, the Frankfort, Ill., native finished with 22 points on six goals and 16 assists and followed up strongly in her sophomore year with 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists, good for the fourth-highest point total on the team.
Kirchner and the Terriers take the ice again this Friday, Oct. 9 against Robert Morris at 7 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.
