After a strong performance against New Hampshire this past weekend, the No. 7 women's ice hockey team (3-3-5, 1-2-1-1) looks to get back to .500 in conference action as it welcomes Vermont (5-5-0, 1-3-0) to Walter Brown Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup. Tonight's game represents the first of three regular-season contests between the two teams and the only time the Catamounts are scheduled to come to Walter Brown this season.
The Terriers have traditionally matched up well against the Catamounts, holding a 10-1-1 career record against Vermont in 12 total contests. BU holds a 37-11 edge in goals scored and owns six shutouts against UVM. The Terriers have never dropped a game to the Catamounts at Walter Brown Arena, compiling a 6-0-0 mark against the conference foe, including four shutouts. Last season, after Vermont snatched its first win ever over BU at Gutterson Fieldhouse, the Terriers returned home for a weekend sweep of the Catamounts on Jan. 30-31, 2009.
This past weekend saw the Terriers presented with the tall task of taking on conference powerhouse New Hampshire and BU held its own, recording a one-goal loss and a shootout win. Hockey East Rookie of the Week Jill Cardella had a goal and an assist in the 4-3 loss at Walter Brown and netted the go-ahead goal in a 4-4 (1-0) shootout win in Durham a day later. With two assists in the loss, Melissa Anderson tied the program career points mark with 102, set by Gina Kearns last season. Senior Laurel Koller recorded an assist in the game in Durham, and was the only skater of eight to score in the shootout, giving BU an extra point in conference standings.
Cardella upped her season point total to nine (6g, 3a), putting her just one behind points and goals leader Jenelle Kohanchuk (9g, 1a). Anderson leads the team in assists with eight on the season while Jillian Kirchner continues to contribute with seven (2g, 5a) points.
After being blanked 3-0 last Friday by Boston College on the road, the Catamounts erupted for five goals and took home a series split with the Eagles on the strength of a 5-1 win on Saturday. Emily Walsh netted two power-play goals in the win and was joined on the scoresheet by Kailey Nash, Chelsea Furlani and Erin Wente. Maggie Walsh chipped in three assists in the game and goalie Kristen Olychuck recorded 24 stops for her fifth win of the season.
With six goals and three assists, Nash leads the way for the Catamount offense this season, also pacing the team with five power-play goals and three game-winning tallies. Furlani, Maggie Walsh and Erin Barley-Maloney all have six points on the season with Barley Maloney registering a team-high six assists. Olychuck has seen 100% of the action in net this season and boasts a solid 2.31 goals-against average and .898 save percentage.
Vermont is in action next on Saturday as it welcomes No. 4 New Hampshire to Burlington for a 2 p.m. showdown.
After facing Vermont, the Terriers prepare for a home-and-home against Providence to wrap up their season series against the Friars. On Saturday, Nov. 14, the two teams will square off at Agganis Arena in a 2 p.m. start, before heading to Schneider Arena on Sunday for another 2 p.m. showdown.
