DURHAM, N.H. - The Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped the opener of a weekend home-and-home series with New Hampshire on Friday evening, as the Wildcats skated to a 4-2 home victory at the Whittemore Center. The Terriers, who move to 3-7 overall and 2-6 in Hockey East play, will host UNH on Saturday at Agganis Arena at 7 p.m.
Senior Zach Cohen and sophomore Ross Gaudet each potted a goal for the Terriers, while UNH got goals from four different players and improved to 4-6-2 on the year with a 4-2-1 league mark.
Special teams were the difference, as the Terriers came up empty on all five of their chances with the man advantage, while the home team converted on two of its six power plays.
The Wildcats, who never trailed in the game, scored the lone goal of the opening period before Cohen knotted the game with a tally off a faceoff at 4:33 of the second.
UNH went on to score the next two goals, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity later on in the second period to regain the lead before making it a 3-1 affair at 8:07 in the third.
Just 41 seconds after the Wildcats' third goal, Gaudet knocked home a rebound above the left post to get the visitors back within one, but UNH scored its second power-play goal of the night with 8:46 left in regulation and held on for the victory.
The Wildcats held a 27-23 shot advantage for the game, as the Terriers lost while outshot for the first time since Jan. 26, 2008 - also against UNH.
Sophomore Kieran Millan made 23 saves in a losing effort for the Terriers, while Brian Foster picked up the win in goal for UNH with a 21-save performance.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend home-and-home series on Saturday at Agganis Arena in a 7 p.m. contest that will be broadcast live by NESN.
