San Jose, Calif. - Senior Melissa Dubay drove in four runs, including two in extra frames, as the Boston University softball team defeated Sacramento State, 7-4, in nine innings on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers triumphed over host San Jose State, 4-1, earlier in the day as they improve to 3-1 on the young season.

Dubay was 3-for-8 through two games and was crucial in the Terriers' three-run victory over the Hornets. Senior Shayne Lotito hit .500 on Saturday, driving in two runs and crossing home three times.

The Terriers' pitching staff allowed just five runs through 16 innings as juniors Cassidi Hardy and Megan Currier picked up wins in the circle and sophomore Kelley Engman earned a save against Sacarmento Sate.

Three runs in the second and one in the seventh lifted the Terriers over the Spartans in their first game of the afternoon as Lotito went 2-for-4 with two RBI. BU went ahead for good in the third inning as freshman Emily Roesch put the first run on the board with a single to left field and Lotito followed up with a two-run single down the left line that plated Roesch and sophomore Caitlin Rentler.

In the bottom half of the inning a solo home run to left field gave the Spartans their only run of the game as the next three batters went down in order. BU tacked on one more run in the seventh as sophomore April Setterlund knocked in a run in a bases loaded situation with a single to left field.

Hardy went the distance in the victory, striking out six batters and allowing just one run on five hits.

BU capped off the afternoon with a thrilling 7-4 victory in extra innings as it scored three runs in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 deadlock and Engman entered the game in relief forcing two ground outs and striking out the Hornets' final batter for the save.

BU got on the board right off the bat as Dubay hit a two-run single to center field. Sacramento was unable to light up the scoreboard until the fourth inning on a single to center field. The Hornets' Whitney Loomis tripled to right field in the fifth, plating the game-tying run. In the top of the seventh, the Terriers loaded the bases but strong defensive play from Sacramento State got out of the jam to preserve the tie. In the bottom half of the inning, the Hornets advanced a runner to third, but Currier forced a pop out to send the game into extra frames.

Both squads plated two runners in the eighth, but the Terriers broke through in the ninth as freshman Erica Casacci capitalized on an error, scoring the go-ahead run, and Dubay doubled to left center to send Setterlund and Lotito home. Engman shutdown the Hornets in the bottom half of the inning, retiring all three batters in order.

BU will face Sacramento State again on Sunday (March 1) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
