Game 1 | Game 2

BOSTON - In an epic battle between the conference's top two teams, the Boston University softball team prevailed over top-ranked Stony Brook, 6-5, in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon at BU Softball Field, but fell, 6-3, in the night cap. Senior Shayne Lotito smacked a home run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings in game one and junior hurler Cassidi Hardy was impressive in a complete-game effort with eight strikeouts and just one walk.

Hardy went the distance in the marathon, throwing 157 pitches and 110 for strikes. She surrendered five runs - three earned - and scattered 10 hits over 12 innings.

The Terriers loaded the bases in the 12th and a hit by pitch drove in the final run of the game as senior Melissa Dubay crossed home plate for the victory. Sophomore April Setterlund went 3-for-5 and tied a single-season record with her 13th double of the year. Lotito was clutch with two hits, including the game-tying homer in the seventh, while Dubay recorded two hits and was the game-winning run in the 12th.

After allowing the lead-off hitter on base with a single to center field, Hardy settled in and got out of the inning unscathed. In the bottom half of the frame, the Terriers wasted no time as Dubay singled to right center to plate Setterlund.

After a scoreless second inning, Stony Brook took over the lead on a two-run home run by Vicki Kavitsky. The Seawolves did not relent, putting runners on first and second and then a single to right field plated two more to give them the 4-1 advantage.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Terriers mounted a rally as they loaded the bases on their first three batters. Freshman Emily Roesch then drew a walk and senior Brooke Hudson came home to draw to within two, and on the next at-bat Lotito scored on a wild pitch. Senior Christy Leath sacrificed to left field to manufacture the Terriers fourth run of the inning and knot the game at 4-4. In the top of the fifth, the Seawolves moved ahead 5-4 on a sacrifice bunt that plated Kavitsky.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lotito led off the inning with a game-tying home run to center field, sending the game into extra innings. In the eighth, senior Nora Militz doubled to right center to put a runner in scoring position, however, the SBU defense dug in and recorded two outs.

In the ninth, BU nearly put the game away but strong defensive play from the Seawolves' Vicki Kavitsky ended the frame as she made a diving stop on a hard-hit ball and threw to home for the third out of the inning.

In the top of the 11th, Stony Brook threatened with runners on the corners; however, junior Rachel Hebert snagged a hard hit ball to end the frame. One inning later, the Terriers loaded the bases and Militz took one for the team with a pitch to the back, which drove the game-winning run.

In game two, Stony Brook put runners on the corners immediately; however, Roesch turned a double play, tagging the base runner than throwing to first to end the inning. In the third, BU jumped out to a 1-0 advantage as Hudson scored on an error by the catcher. In the fourth, Stony Brook tied it up, 1-1; however, BU responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Hebert.

The Seawolves reclaimed the lead for good in the fifth on a two-run long ball to center field and tacked one two more on a triple and a double. BU drew to within one when Dubay drove in her 120th run of her career on a single to left field, but SBU tacked on one more when they loaded the bases in the sixth.

The Terriers and Seawolves will settle the three-game series on Sunday at noon in the rubber match. In a pre-game ceremony, head coach Shawn Rychcik and the program will honor its six seniors.
