BOSTON - After splitting Saturday's doubleheader with Stony Brook, the Boston University softball team dropped the weekend series, as junior Casey Jacobs pitched a near flawless game to help the Seawolves earn a 6-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at BU Softball Field. With the loss, the Terriers fall to 30-15 and 8-5 in America East play, while SBU cushions its first-place lead, improving to 30-9, 11-3 AE.
Jacobs only allowed one hit in the first and seventh innings and gave up an unearned run, while senior Cassidi Hardy struggled with her command for the Terriers, allowing eight free passes and six earned runs. Vicki Kavitsky led the Seawolves at the top of the batting order with a 2-of-2 performance that included two scored runs and a walk, while seniors Melissa Dubay and Christy Leath each had singles for BU on Senior Day.
A day after allowing just one walk while throwing 157 pitches in a 12-inning marathon victory against SBU, Hardy quickly found herself in trouble in the first inning. With Kavitsky on second and one out, the next two batters in Kelsi Fanelli and Marissa Fleury found themselves behind in the count but battled hard to earn the walks and load the bases.
Kelly Oberto and Molly Kestranek each earned a RBI with a walk to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead, but Hardy prevented anymore damage by enticing a ground out and a strike out.
Senior Shayne Lotito tried to put the Terriers in position to score in the bottom of the inning by attempting to steal second after reaching first off an error by the pitcher. However, Jade Clare threw a bullet to second to get the out.
The Seawolves plated a run in the fourth and then added three more in the sixth to take a commanding 6-0 lead. SBU loaded the bases with one out and followed with a walk and two singles to extend the lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior Nora Militz earned a free pass as a pinch hitter and was replaced at first by Dubay following a fielder's choice ground out. Following senior Megan Coughlin's walk and Leath's single through the left side to load the bases, junior Rachel Hebert lined out on a hard hit to short.
However, during the play, Kavitsky tried to end the game with a throw to first but misfired, allowing Dubay to score and avoid the shutout. Junior Rachel Moeller's fly out to right stopped any potential rally.
The Terriers return to the field on Wednesday (April 22) to host Maine in a conference game with action set to start at 3 p.m. The two teams earlier split a double header at Maine back on April 8.
