BOSTON - Senior Shayne Lotito smacked a lead-off home run and junior Megan Currier shutdown the Boston College offense, as the Boston University softball team blanked BC, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon at BU Softball Field. With the win, the Terriers improve to 35-15 overall, while the Eagles fall to 18-29.
Currier improved to 10-8 in the pitcher's circle, earning her third shutout of the season in the complete-game effort. She struck out three Eagles and walked just one batter while giving up two hits in seven innings of work.
Lotito provided the game-winning run with her fifth homer of the season in the first inning as she went 1-for-3 on the afternoon. Senior Brooke Hudson also had a productive afternoon with two hits - an infield single and a double to center field - to go along with one walk.
Lotito led off with a long ball to left field, swinging the momentum into BU's favor immediately. The Terriers continued to apply the pressure, loading the bases; however, a 1-2-3 double play ended frame. BC threatened in the top of the third, but a heads up play by Hudson ended it as BC lined out to third base and she tagged the lead runner for the third out.
Both pitchers settled into a rhythm and held the offenses scoreless over the next six frames and in the final 1.5 innings both lineups went down in order.
Head coach Shawn Rychcik needs just one more win to become the program's all-time winningest coach. In five seasons, Rychcik has amassed a 153-100 career record, tying former manager Deb Solfaro, who guided the Terriers from 1996-2000. The Terriers also need one more victory to tie a team record for wins in a season.
BU will host Harvard tomorrow (April 30) at 4 p.m., before closing out the regular season at Binghamton this weekend.
