BURLINGTON, Vt. - John Holland and Corey Lowe combined for 39 points, but the Boston University men's basketball team could not overcome a 4-for-24 first-half shooting performance in a 78-58 loss at Vermont Sunday afternoon. The Terriers (9-9, 4-2 AE) see their four game win streak snap, while the Catamounts (13-5, 4-0 AE) capture their sixth straight after a week off to remain atop the America East standings.
Playing in their fourth game in eight days, BU's America East player of the game Holland and Loew combined for 14 of the Terriers' 20 made field goals with Holland going 7-for-14 and Lowe finishing 7-for-18, respectively. Jeff Pelage had a solid day hitting four of his six attempts for eight points along with eight rebounds, but the rest of the team went 2-for-18 from the field.
Named Vermont's America East player of the game, Garvey Young had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds, while Maurice Joseph contributed 14 points along with seven rebounds. The league's two-time Player of the Year Marqus Blakely only had 11 points and three rebounds, but his presence was not needed in the game, as the Catamounts' bench recorded 22 points and 14 rebounds. Vermont won the rebound battle, 42-31, and also committed three fewer turnovers, 8-11.
After Vermont scored the first five points of the contest, Pelage's layup put BU on the board at 16:59, but the Terriers would not make another field goal until the 6:31 mark when Holland hit a basket to put the score at 25-8.
Holland tallied the final points of the half for either team at 1:17 with a made free throw to complete a three-point play, as BU entered the second half down, 33-19. Vermont hit 13-of-28 (.464) to take the commanding lead into the locker room.
The Terriers came out of the gate fast to start the second, scoring eight points in the first 2:18 of action to trail only 38-24 following a Lowe jumper. However, Vermont responded with a 20-2 run capped by Brendan Bald's layup at 11:59 to take a 58-26 lead with 11:59 remaining.
BU never gave up though and cut the lead to 15, 68-53, with 4:12 remaining on a Holland jumper, but the original 32-point deficit proved to be too large to overcome.
With the victory, Vermont has won seven of the last eight contests between the two teams and now trails the all-time series, 51-40.
The Terriers will not have much time to think about the loss, as they next host Albany on Tuesday at Agganis Arena with a 7 p.m. tip-off. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a BU basketball jersey.
