BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 20 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell victim to a three-goal first period by Vermont and was unable to recover, as the Terriers dropped a 7-3 contest to the 18th-ranked Catamounts on Friday evening at Gutterson Fieldhouse. BU drops to an even 14-14-13 on the year and 11-11-2 in Hockey East play.
Vermont, which got its seven goals from six different players, improves to 14-11-6 overall with an 8-10-6 conference mark.
The Catamounts jumped out to an early 2-0 lead midway through the opening period and took a 3-1 advantage into the first intermission. In the middle stanza, Vermont wasted little time in establishing a three-goal lead and prevented the Terriers from mounting a comeback.
Sophomore goaltender Kieran Millan recorded 29 saves on 34 shots in his first start at Gutterson but was pulled after two periods. Classmate Grant Rollheiser stopped two of the three shots he faced in the third period.
Trailing 5-2 entering the third, BU scored on an early power-play chance at 2:32 of the frame, but Vermont answered with a power-play tally of its own less than four minutes later.
After consecutive penalties on the Catamounts in the late stages of the third, BU pulled Rollheiser for nearly four minutes looking to cut into the 6-3 deficit, but Vermont finally scored on the empty net with 54 seconds left in regulation to create the 7-3 final.
BU, which went 2-of-6 on the man advantage, got goals from senior Zach Cohen and sophomores David Warsofsky and Vinny Saponari. Sophomore Chris Connolly earned a pair of assists.
Junior Josh Burrows tallied a pair of goals for the Catamounts while seniors Brayden Irwin and Brian Roloff each recorded a goal and two assists.
Vermont outshot BU, 38-24, including a 21-2 advantage in the second period. Sophomore Rob Madore picked up the win in goal with a 21-save performance.
The teams will take a day off before meeting again at Gutterson on Sunday (Feb. 28) for a 3 p.m. contest that will be broadcast live by ESPNU.
