INDIANAPOLIS - Seniors Melissa Anderson and Melissa Haber of the Hockey East champion Boston University women's ice hockey team have been selected to participate in the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge on April 9 in Detroit. Anderson is one of six female skaters and Haber is one of two female goaltenders that will compete on the East squad.
The competition includes the top seniors from across all divisions in both men's and women's ice hockey. The players were selected by representatives from the American Hockey Coaches Association and NCAA national office staff. The competitions will include puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shot in an East vs. West format.
Anderson is BU's all-time leading scorer, entering the NCAA tournament with 132 career points (57g, 75a). The Langley, B.C., native was named a second-team All-Star in Hockey East and earned a spot on the Hockey East All-Tournament Team after scoring two goals and adding an assist in the conference tournament.
Haber was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the Hockey East Tournament after allowing only two goals in three tournament games. A second-team Hockey East All-Star, the Toronto native has gone 15-7-8 this season with a 1.98 goals-against average and .924 save percentage.
Anderson and Haber will be joined on the women's East team by skaters Anna McDonald of Harvard, Sarah Parsons of Dartmouth, Kelly Paton of New Hampshire, Britni Smith of St. Lawrence and Allie Thunstrom of Boston College, as well as St. Lawrence goalie Brittony Chartier.
Last season, goaltender Allyse Wilcox participated in the event and head coach Brian Durocher served as one of the coaches on the East squad that won the competition, 16-8.
The Frozen Four Skills Challenge begins at 8 p.m. on April 9 at Ford Field in Detroit and will be preceded by the presentations of the Hockey Humanitarian Award at 6:30 p.m. and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award at 7 p.m.
