Terriers Take Two from Toledo, Indiana

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team (7-9) took down Toledo, 13-7, and Indiana, 6-2, on its final day in Clearwater, Fla. Through two games junior Christina Valdes and freshman Taylor Cowan each drove in three runs, while the pitching duo of freshman Whitney Tuthill and senior Cassidi Hardy won in the circle.

Against Toledo, Tuthill struck out two batters, while walking two and allowing seven runs - one earned run - on six hits. Against Indiana, Hardy went the distance for the sixth time this season, striking out six batters, issuing one walk and allowing two runs on seven hits.

In batter's box, Valdes led the way with three hits in six at-bats through two games, while driving in a trio of runs. Cowan went 2-for-7 with two doubles and three RBIs, while senior April Setterlund was 3-for-7 with two RBIs, one home run and one double. Setterlund is now two doubles away from breaking the all-time record at BU. Sophomore Kayla Kruper and junior Rachel Hebert each drove in a pair of runs in two games.

Against Toledo, the Terriers took the lead in the second inning when it scored six runs on six hits, highlighted by Cowan's two-run double to left center field, which plated senior Rachel Moeller and junior Caitlin Rentler. Two at-bats later, Cowan and Hebert tacked on another run on an RBI single, which brought home junior Kelley Engman. Rounding out the scoring in the second was Kruper and Hebert, as the Terriers took the lead and never looked back.

Toledo would come back to score two runs in the bottom half of the frame, however, three additional runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the seventh held off a late rally when Toledo scored four in the bottom of the seventh.

An hour later, the Terriers took on the Hoosiers and came away with a four-run victory as they broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth frame with Setterlund went deep for the fifth time this season to give BU the 2-0 lead as sophomore Erica Casacci scored as well. A three-run outburst in the fifth inning, gave the Terriers a commanding 5-0 lead as Engman, Hebert and Valdes scored.

Indiana would come back to score one in the fifth and one in the sixth, however, the Terriers held on for the victory and added one more run in the Valdes drove in Cowan on an RBI single.

BU will return to action on March 20 and 21 when it takes on Hofstra and Connecticut in Hempstead, N.Y.
