BOSTON - Junior April Setterlund had a historic afternoon as she broke single-game game school records for RBIs and total bases to help the Boston University softball team (13-10) sweep Holy Cross (4-12) on Saturday afternoon. Setterlund was an impressive 6-for-6 through two games, with four home runs, one double and 13 RBIs. BU won the first game, 12-5, and followed up with a 13-3 victory.
Setterlund set single-game marks for RBIs with seven in the second game and total bases with 10 in the first game. Additionally, she tied the single-game record for home runs with two in each game, which matches Chiya Louie from 2007 and Melissa Dubay from 2009. The junior outfielder batted 1.000 and earned a 3.167 slugging percentage through two games as she was walked twice - including one intentional. Senior Rachel Moeller recorded two doubles in the first game to tie a single-game school record as well.
As a team, BU was an impressive .327 with four Terriers hitting over .500. In addition to Setterlund, freshman Whitney Tuthill and senior Rachel Moeller each batted .571, while sophomore Erica Casacci went 3-for-6 in two games. Tuthill drove in four runs and hit two over the fence, while senior Rachel Hebert and junior Christina Valdes drove in two runs apiece.
In the pitching circle, senior Cassidi Hardy picked up the win in the first game, striking out eight batters and allowing three hits but no runs in five innings of relief. In the second game, Tuthill went the distance to earn her fourth game of the season with four strikeouts, six hits and three earned runs.
GAME 1
After finding themselves down 3-0 after the first half inning, the Terriers came back to score one when Moeller drove in Hebert on a double to left field; however, the Crusaders tacked on two more in the top of the second on back-to-back RBI hits to make it 5-1.
In the bottom of the second, BU added a run when sophomore Emily Roesch scored off an RBI single from Hebert to make it a 5-2 game and on the next at-bat Setterlund doubled to left field to plate Hebert and Valdes. On the third-straight hit, junior Caitlin Rentler singled through the left side to bring Setterlund home and tie the contest at 5-5.
In the bottom of the fourth, Setterlund collected another long ball when she went deep to right center to give the Terriers their first lead of the game, 6-5. The following inning, Setterlund again went deep in her third at-bat, clearing the bases and adding three more runs onto the scoreboard to take a 9-5 advantage.
The Terriers bats remained alive in the sixth inning as Tuthill drilled one over the fence to give the squad a commanding 12-5 advantage as freshman Taylor Cowan and Roesch also scored on the play. Setterlund again stepped up to the plate and was intentionally walked after going 3-for-3 in her first at-bats, and Rentler followed up with a hard smacked hit, however, Holy Cross' Caitlin Belanger made a great defensive play to get the Crusaders out of the bases-loaded jam and end the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hardy finished off the victory with a strike out.
GAME 2
Setterlund continued with her tear in the second game, clearing the bases in the first inning on a home run to left field to help the Terriers jump out to a 3-0 lead. Hebert and Casacci scored on the play, after getting on base on a walk and a single, respectively. BU added another run in the first Cowan grounded out to second, allowing Rentler to score.
The Terriers went on to load the bases and Valdes battled with Holy Cross' Amanda Audette before drawing the walk and pushing home Moeller. One at-bat later Roesch scored on a sacrifice fly out to right field. Hitting twice in the first inning, Setterlund knocked in two more runs as she ripped a single up the middle.
After getting through the top half of the second frame without allowing any runs, the Terriers added three more as Tuthill and Valdes hit back-to-back home runs to make it an 11-0 game.
In the third, Holy Cross tacked three on the board off four hits, highlighted by a two-run double to center field. In the bottom of the frame, Setterlund swung for her fourth home run of the afternoon to move the score to 13-3.
In the final two innings, Tuthill retired six of the seven batters she faced and the Terriers ended their afternoon with a ground out to shortstop.
The Terriers will host Dartmouth tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon at BU Softball Field.
