CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston University softball team (23-17) dropped two games to crosstown rival Boston College (14-25) on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Field. In the first game, BU fell by a 5-0 margin and in the second contest lost 2-1 in eight frames. Senior Rachel Hebert scored the Terriers' lone run with a home run in game two.
Senior Cassidi Hardy was charged with the loss in game one, surrendering five runs - four earned - off eight hits, while striking out 10 batters and issuing two walks. Freshman Whitney Tuthill went the distance in game two with six Ks, one walk and one hit; however, two runs crossed home and one was earned.
Offensively, senior Rachel Hebert went 2-for-4 in game two - including BU's lone run off a home run - while sophomore Erica Casacci recorded the team's other hit. In the first game, junior Christina Valdes and Tuthill managed hits for the Terriers.
After a two-run first inning where the Eagles scored on a two-run blast to right field, Hardy settled in and struck out nine batters over the next four innings, while the offense recorded two hits off BC's Nicole D'Argento.
The Eagles tacked on one more in the fifth as a bases-loaded walk allowed the team's third runner to cross home plate. In the final inning, BC put two additional runs on the scoreboard on a ground out and an RBI single.
In game two, BC took an early 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single into right center field; however, after five scoreless innings, Hebert knotted the score at 1-1 with a solo shot to left field in the top of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, BU threatened again with runners on first and second with no outs; however, BC recorded three outs when pitcher Allison Gage made a heads up play to get the lead runner out and then an unassisted double play at shortstop ended the frame.
In the bottom half of the frame, Tuthill recorded two strikeouts and forced a fly out to send the game into extra innings. In the eighth inning, Boston College scored the walk-off run following an error in the field.
BU will host URI on Thursday (April 22) in a doubleheader at BU Softball Field beginning at 3 p.m. before welcoming Binghamton in an AE three-game series the following weekend.
